The Young and the Restless Recap for Thursday, November 21, 2024: Phyllis' condition changes

Summer ran into Kyle at Crimson Lights. He shared that he only told Harrison that his grandma was sick and that Summer was busy caring for her. Summer admitted that she was worried her mom wasn’t going to pull through.

Kyle told Summer she didn’t need to pretend like she was keeping it all together. They agreed they both put up pretenses during the custody battle. Summer talked to Kyle about her mom being hospitalized and Daniel’s exoneration. Summer didn’t think her family would ever forgive Sharon. Kyle said he could relate to the feeling of life giving her more than she could handle.

Summer offered to talk about Kyle’s problems, but he didn’t want to. He said he knew how close her family was and how hard it was to stay strong, but he also knew how tough Summer was. Summer knew she needed to shift her attitude and focus on a positive outcome. “She is going to wake up; she is going to be okay,” Summer said determinedly. Kyle agreed and said he would be there for her anytime.

Chance walked into Crimson Lights and spotted Kyle and Summer so he held back a moment and watched them before coming in and greeting them. “Surprised to see you here. You should be at the hospital,” Chance said to Summer. She jumped up and said she was just getting coffee for her and Daniel and was on her way back. Summer said there was no change in Phyllis’ condition, and she was lucky to be alive. “And the more I think about it, the more I realize this was your fault,” Summer tells Chance.

Chance said he understood that Summer was upset because he arrested her brother and didn’t follow up on Phyllis’ claims that Sharon was the murderer. Summer went off on Chance, telling him that just because Daniel was exonerated didn’t get Chance off the hook with her. “If you had listened to what my mom was saying, if you had arrested Sharon, she wouldn’t have been able to run her off the road,” Summer said.

Chance acknowledged that Summer was looking for someone to blame. Summer was furious that he was being dismissive of her feelings. “I’m a cop. I do not have the luxury of feelings,” Chance said. He said he followed the facts and reiterated there was zero evidence that involved Sharon. Summer snapped that he stopped looking at the facts.

“You had plenty of opportunities to do things differently, and you chose not to,” Summer said. She added that Chance knew that her brother was incapable of murder, and he arrested him anyway, then washed his hands of the entire situation. Chance insisted he was just doing his job. “Your job? Daniel’s my brother! You should have done more than just the bare minimum of your job,” Summer said angrily. Chance said they would need to find a way to get past it, but Summer didn’t think there was a way.

Chance told Summer he hated everything about the case and that he barely slept throughout it. “Then you should have been open to more options,” Summer said. Chance said he was — as long as there was evidence to back it up. He said he knew now that the evidence against Daniel was planted. “I’ve thought about this case, and if I had to do it all over again, I don’t think there’s anything I’d do differently,” Chance concluded. “Seriously? I don’t think I can accept that,” Summer told him.

Chance told her she needed to move past it, but Summer said that Chance didn’t get it. “These last few weeks have been hell for my entire family, and I’ve had to be strong for Daniel and Lucy and now my mom. I wish that I could have leaned on you; I needed that. But all I see when I look at you is anger,” Summer explained.

Summer said she wanted to forgive Chance for making a mistake, but he interrupted to tell her that he hadn’t. Chance said she needed to move past it because he didn’t make a mistake. “You arrested an innocent man. My brother. And now, my mom is in the hospital because of that. I don’t know if she’s ever going to move past that,” Summer snapped. She told Chance she didn’t think they should see each other for a little while, then walked out.

Jack asked Billy what he meant about losing Jill. “She’s ill but not so ill she wasn’t capable of jumping on a plane, coming to Genoa City, and stabbing me in the heart,” Billy said. He explained that his mother had taken Chancellor from him and handed it to Victor.

Billy told Jack about Jill’s health condition and didn't feel bad breaking her confidence after she betrayed him. Billy said she wouldn’t listen to him but allowed Victor to get in her ear. Jack noted that Victor had been interfering in their family in more ways than one. Billy wanted Jack’s help with getting payback.

Billy explained that the Newman Media hatchet jobs were doing in his reputation as a leader, and he needed to save face quickly. “I need to show that when I get knocked down, I get back up, and I’m still capable of doing the job,” Billy said. With Kyle defecting to Glissade and Diane out at Jabot, he thought Jack needed a strong second in command.

Jack didn’t know what to tell Billy and hesitated. Billy told him all the reasons it was a sound decision and promised he wouldn’t cause any problems. “I’ve been through the wringer both personally and professionally, and one thing that I’ve learned through all that is I can count on you,” Billy told him. Jack empathized with his plight. Billy told Jack that Nikki was taking his spot. Billy promised he wouldn’t cause any drama but needed to return to Jabot.

“The truth is, Jack, as much as I’ve rejected your advice and wisdom over the years, I respect your leadership, and I want to follow you wherever you take this company,” Billy said. He could tell that Jack was trying to find a way to reject him even though the position was open. “Do you not think I’m capable of doing the job? Or have I screwed up one too many times?” Billy asked. Jack insisted he wasn’t thinking anything negative. “What are you thinking then because I'm asking for a lifeline and to come back and work at Jabot,” Billy implored. “I’m sorry, Billy. I can’t,” Jack told him.

Jack promised it would become clear in just a few days why he couldn’t hire him. “Is there someone else you have in mind to replace Diane?” Billy asked. Jack asked him to trust him and said he couldn’t discuss it with him. “You know half your family is turning against you, and they’re aligning with Victor. And still, that’s not enough for you to see that you need me just as much as I need you,” Billy said. Jack was speechless. “Whatever, Jack,” Billy told him before walking out.

Billy went to the Athletic Club. Sally joined him at the bar, and he told her about Jack rejecting him. Billy joked he was going to join the carnival and cracked a joke. Billy was grateful for their friendship and how, no matter what, she made him laugh. Billy thought they had two choices: run away together and join the carnival, or they could sit there and he’d buy them a drink. Sally suggested they did the second one first, and then they would decide on option one.

Over drinks, Billy said he needed to accept that Jack felt the same way about him as everyone else did. Sally knew Jack to be a fair man. Sally noted she had a sister, too, and they don’t always see eye-to-eye, but Billy knew it wasn’t a level comparison. He added that his family never believed in him, and it was tough. “You can’t choose your family or who you fall in love with,” Sally said. They agreed that they could only choose their friends. Sally put her hand on his and said she was glad they made this choice. Billy leaned in and kissed her.

Jack met Diane at the park and she asked if Billy had bought their act. Jack brought her up to date about Chancellor, Jill, and Victor. Jack said he was concerned about Billy and told her how he asked for a job. Jack said when he couldn’t give him a real reason, Billy took it the wrong way and thought Jack didn’t believe in him. Despite their plan, Jack insisted he wouldn’t bring Kyle back to Jabot until he could prove that he’d learned his lesson.

Diane told Jack that she was choosing to give up her position and give it to Kyle. Diane thought it would show Kyle that they did what they did to help him, not to punish him. Jack wanted to hear Kyle say those words. Jack thought they both deserved an apology from Kyle and worried that otherwise, Kyle would be an arrogant, pompous version of Victor stomping around Jabot. “If Kyle can’t put all of this behind him, then he can’t come back to us,” Jack decided.

Elena found Daniel still at Phyllis’ bedside in the morning and suggested he go home to rest, but Daniel said he wouldn’t get any sleep there, either. “I just feel so damn guilty,” Daniel shared.

Elena suggested that after checking on Phyllis, she should check on Daniel. Daniel said he didn’t need a therapist yet. Daniel explained that everything could be traced back to the night that Cassie died. Although it happened a long time ago, Sharon murdered his partner, framed him, and ran his mother off the road. “It all started with me,” Daniel said. He explained that if he hadn’t gotten drunk that night, Cassie wouldn’t have driven him home, Heather would still be alive, and his mother wouldn’t be lying in a hospital bed.

Elena agreed that Daniel made choices that night, but so did Cassie and Sharon, and he couldn’t carry the blame for theirs. Elena suggested that Daniel needed to make a choice to heal. “She’s right, Dad,” Lucy said as she walked in. Daniel jumped up and hugged her.

Elena introduced herself to Lucy, and then Lucy sat down and chatted to Phyllis. Lucy told Phyllis about a boy named Scotty, whom she met while on tour with Danny and kept her company while Daniel watched and smiled.

Daniel and Lucy caught up, and she told him that she had enjoyed being on tour. They showed each other their bracelets and they had never taken them off. They talked about Phyllis and her condition. “I’m really sorry that I wasn’t there for everything. The funeral, you getting arrested. I really hate that you were alone for that,” Lucy told her dad. Daniel said he had her in his heart. Lucy thought that Heather was with him as well.

Daniel and Lucy had a good visit next to Phyllis and made each other smile a lot. Lucy said that she wanted to plan the celebration of life for Heather now that she was back, but Daniel said they’d wait for Phyllis. Summer came back and noted that the room felt brighter with Lucy there. “We’re all here now. It would be a really good time to wake up,” Lucy told her grandma. She asked Phyllis not to leave her like her mom did.

Lucy asked for some time alone with Phyllis. She told her that Daniel needed her the most, and she had to wake up. Lucy tied her bracelet to Phyllis’ wrist and promised to make her one of her own.

In the waiting room, Summer said she could see a difference in Daniel already with Lucy back. Daniel told Summer that having to send Lucy away was another thing he’d never forgive Sharon for. Lucy burst in, calling him. Daniel, Summer, and Lucy ran to Phyllis and held their breath as she woke up.
