The Young and the Restless tells triangle stories incredibly well, as evidenced by the show's rich history (Nikki/Victor/Ashley, anyone?). Now, the show is poised to tell another terrific triangle with the characters of Lily Winters, Cane Ashby, and Phyllis Summers.

Josh Griffith, the show's executive producer and head writer, previewed the Lily/Cane/Phyllis (comprised of, respectively, Christel Khalil, Billy Flynn, and Michelle Stafford) to TV Insider.

Griffith enthused that there's an opportunity to tell a "massively and interesting triangle" with these three characters. In a way, it's sort of a quadrangle as Phyllis is attracted to Dumas, Cane's alter ego, while Lily loves Cane.

"The battle will be which of those two personas that Cane represents will win out," Griffith says. On one hand, Phyllis wants to be rich and successful, and may not care about who gets damaged along the way.

Conversely, Lily is Cane's heart and soul, but he's also a bit lost. Cane is going after various companies and clans in Genoa City, but is he willing to give up his plan if he means he could get back together with Lily?

Cane, of course, is still in love with Lily, but in his quest to gain wealth as Dumas, he got lost along the way. Lily is faced with breaking through Cane's defenses and bringing back Cane.

While Cane was away from Genoa City, he reconnected with his father, Colin. They reconciled, and Colin spent his last days with both Cane and Jill (Jess Walton). On his deathbed, Colin urged Cane to leave Dumas in the past and focus on what's truly important in life.

Cane couldn't have predicted the tragic events that would occur in France at his chateau when he invited Lily, the Newmans, the Abbotts, and other power players from Genoa City to his home. He revealed himself, but then things went south quickly.

Lily was not happy to see Cane. There was no cell phone service. A storm prevented folks from escaping the grounds. Then, Carter (Vincent Stalba) killed both Damian (Jermaine Rivers) and Chance (Conner Floyd), and then, himself!

Cane said he never meant for any of that to happen, but it did transpire. Will Lily's love redeem Cane? Or will he opt to tap back into his Dumas persona and be with Phyllis? Stay tuned.
