Y&R goes back to the future with new audio-only showcast

The Young and the Restless is going back to the future for a brand-new feature to help usher in its 50th anniversary. The CBS soap has announced that it will be debuting what it calls a "showcast" starting tomorrow.

In 2022, soap fans have a bunch of different ways to keep up with their favorite soaps. There's the live network broadcast, DVRing the network broadcast, streaming platforms, on-demand services, and, of course, web sites like Soap Central that provide daily recaps. Back when soap operas first started, though, there was just a single option: a live radio broadcast.

As part of its big 50th anniversary celebration, The Young and the Restless is debuting an audio-only podcast version of the show -- which CBS has dubbed a "showcast." The showcast, according to the network, will give fans "an unprecedented method to access their favorite stories."

"We are thrilled to be launching The Young and the Restless as a showcast. As we continue to expand our podcast offerings, we find shows that share a deeply passionate fanbase translate well into the audio space," said Steve Raizes, EVP of podcasting and audio for Paramount. "We've seen significant success with this strategy with The Late Show Pod Show with Stephen Colbert and The Daily Show: Ears Edition and expect similar results with The Young and the Restless."

Y&R becomes the first and only daytime drama series with a showcast. Think of it as a modern take on the origins of soap operas on American radio that captivated many at-home audiences for years. The showcast will not contain interviews or behind-the-scenes stories; it is strictly an audio-only version of each day's show.

The Young and the Restless showcast will be available via audio on all major streaming platforms starting Friday, September 30. New episodes will drop every weekday at 3:30 pm Eastern/12:30 pm Pacific.

What do you think of the showcast idea? Are there times when you might choose to listen to the show instead of watching it? We want to hear from you -- and there are many ways you can share your thoughts.
