RUMOR REPORT: Is Patrick Mulcahey replacing Josh Griffith as head writer at The Young and the Restless?

Can you believe everything you read on the Internet? Former The Bold and the Beautiful writer Patrick Mulcahey addresses the rumor that he's been asked to take over head writing duties from The Young and the Restless' Josh Griffith.

Rumors have been swirling about a potential head writer change at The Young and the Restless, where co-executive producer Josh Griffith has been in the position since the spring of 2019. Word on the street is that former The Bold and the Beautiful writer Patrick Mulcahey has been asked to join the CBS soap opera as lead writer, but is it true?

The rumor states that Mulcahey, who in November decided to take a break from the business after serving as a scriptwriter and storyline consultant on B&B for 15 years, isn't sure if he wants the responsibility of becoming Y&R's head writer. Upon hearing the rumor himself, Mulcahey took to social media to set the record straight.

"I love everything about this rumor -- '...not sure if he wants the job and all the responsibility' sounds just like me! But I'm obliged to say somebody's leading you on. No such discussion was had and no such offer's been made," he shares, adding, "Think about it. Y&R just got a multi-year renewal and a Writers Guild award all in the same week. I think they must be pretty happy with their writing staff."

Mulcahey took the occasion to also praise Josh Griffith, sharing, "Josh and I have known each other since Santa Barbara. He's a good guy who takes his work seriously. Like me, at this point he's worked with just about everybody in daytime, so if he decides he needs help, he's got a big pool to draw from. But I do appreciate your faith in me."

Mulcahey got his start in daytime television by writing for the Another World spinoff, Texas, from 1980 to 1981. He moved on to Loving in 1983 and then took on a longer position at Santa Barbara, where he stayed from 1984 to 1990. That stint overlapped with his time at Guiding Light, where he served as associate head writer and head writer during his tenure, which lasted until 1994. Mulcahey took his talents to General Hospital from 1996 to 1999 before finally landing at B&B in 2005.

Mulcahey announced his decision to step down from his B&B writing duties late last year but assured fans that he was not permanently retiring.

"Thanks for all the kind words and good wishes, but I'm not retiring! I've just put in fifteen satisfying years at The Bold and the Beautiful and am taking a little break before looking for my next job," he told Daytime Confidential. "If I'm very lucky, it'll be as good to me and for me as B&B was."

Josh Griffith originally joined Y&R back in 2006 as a consultant who later became a part of the writing team and eventually replaced Maria Arena Bell as head writer in 2012. After leaving the series due to "irreconcilable differences" in 2013, he served as co-head writer of Days of our Lives alongside Dena Higley for a brief time in 2015. Griffith returned to Y&R as a supervising producer in 2018 and was named co-executive producer and head writer in December of that year, following the departure of Mal Young. He received his first credit as co-executive producer on February 6, 2019, his first co-head writing credit, alongside Young, beginning on March 20, 2019, and on April 2, he was credited as the show's sole head writer.
