For 30 years, daytime Last year, it seemed like Braeden might not hit the milestone. Involved in heated contract negotiations, Braeden balked at taking a slashed salary in the middle on an existing contract. Show executives didn't blink and wrote his character off the canvas. So was it strange to be celebrating an anniversary so soon after such a public flap?"That's a very good question," Braeden told TVGuide Canada's Nelson Branco in a recent interview. "Well, I was lucky to have the people there who I wanted to celebrate with. Maria [Arena Bell, Y&R's co-head writer] threw the party which, of course, meant a lot to me. Naturally, I'm very fond of her. Maria does a very good job on Y&R. Her enthusiasm for the show is infectious. She really loves her actors. That had been missing from the set for a very long time. To be honest with you, she's been a godsend. Without her, I wouldn't be here today. In fact, I know I wouldn't be here. And I wouldn't want to be here, I don't think. She has made an enormous difference. In a sense, she has the same passion for this show that Bill Bell had. She's continued in the footsteps of her father-in-law. Most of the people I like and respect were at the party, so I had fun, to answer your question. My family, including my granddaughter whom I adore, was also there."To many, Braeden is an imposing figure that strikes fear in their hearts. "I'm not being shy about this - I honestly do not know why. The only thing I can say is that I try to have genuine feelings and moments on the show whenever I can. [...] In the emotional scenes, I definitely feel what Victor is feeling. Maybe that's what the audience sees and respects about Victor."It's been a little more than two months since Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) made his last appearance on The Young and the Restless. For fans of the actor and his character, it's felt more like two years. There is light at the end of the tunnel, Victorholics: the Emmy-winning actor returns to the airwaves this week.

Braeden's disappearance from the canvas was the result of a prolonged and very public contract flap between the actor and show executives. Briefly, Braeden was asked to take a paycut to help keep the show operating within its budget. Braeden agreed to work for less money, but he refused to do so in the middle of an already-negotiated contract. Executives at Sony, the production company in charge of getting The Young and the Restless on television sets every weekday, held fast to their demands. As a result, Braeden and his alter ego were given the boot.

Outraged at the way things had transpired, Braeden gave a series of interviews in which he blasted those responsible for his dismissal as "aloof and arrogant." Cooler heads prevailed and the two sides did get back to the bargaining table. About two weeks after Braeden's exit was first announced, it was announced that a deal had been reached. Still, because story was already written and scenes were taped in advance, it was impossible to get Victor back in Genoa City just as quickly.

Braeden joined The Young and the Restless in 1980. He was last see on-air on November 2, when Victor headed out of town. Braeden's first return airdate is January 15.
