Fans of the critically acclaimed crime drama You no longer have to anticipate a new season, because season 5 is officially confirmed. The show will be coming back for a fitting curtain call later this year. While a date is yet to be announced, the streaming platform has assured that the show will be released later this year.
Previously, You faced the risk of being canceled after season 1. However, after the ratings began pooling in with affirmative responses, the series was quickly renewed for a few more seasons up until the final one. The show's chilling plot, character development, and cast have contributed to the hit factor of the show.
You follows the story of a serial killer named Joe Goldberg and his maniacal fantasies about his lovers. Goldberg's biggest advantage as a criminal is his facade of being a goody-two-shoes. What he doesn't expect is that his new lover and now-girlfriend Kate Lockwood will give into his demented world and disturbing fantasies.
Season 4 of You ended with a mind-boggling plot twist of Goldberg having an epiphany of remorse for his departed victims. Goldberg was on the cusp of ending his own life before he realized that his story wasn't over yet.
Here's who is joining the cast for You Season 5
As emphasized earlier, Penn Badgley will be reprising his role as the serial killer Joe Goldberg. Also returning are Charlotte Ritchie (Kate Lockwood), Ed Speelers (Rhys), Tati Gabrielle (Marianne Bellamy), and Amy Leigh Hickman (Nadia).
Per several set photos circulating on the internet, the show is also set to include several new cast members for the upcoming season. A Handmaid's Tale star Madeline Brewer is joining the cast of season 5 as the bookworm and budding literary mogul, Bronte. She plays a key role in Goldberg's identity crisis.
Joining her is Pitch Perfect alumnus Anna Camp who will be taking on a double role of Goldberg's twin sisters-in-law. Likewise, Griffin Matthews will be playing Teddy Lockwood - Goldberg's brother-in-law.
The other cast members include Natasha Behnam who will be playing an aristocrat, Dominique. Additionally, Nava Mau will be taking on the role of Detective Marquez - the cop who could take down Goldberg for good.
Here's what we know about the plot of You Season 5
The show will pick up where it left off: Goldberg allegedly turning over a new leaf with a clean slate. Goldberg now finds himself in New York, the very place where he began his killing spree. However, fans and viewers of the show speculate that his remorseful phase wouldn't last long because of the core of his character.
A former creative team member of the show, Sera Gamble, briefly commented on the show's plot involving Goldberg's character. Do note that Goldberg still has some skeletons in his closet and returning to his homeland could prove dangerous. In line with that, Gamble explained to TV Line,
"Some of them are in jail, and some of them are basically in witness protection, but there's no reason to believe he's safe."
The show's fandom eagerly awaits answers about Goldberg's fate now that he's back with a new agenda in mind. However, whether or not he would face the music for his actions or go down in flames remains unknown. But, the teaser trailer did give us some insight.
The trailer for You Season 5
Netflix dropped a teaser of the final season of You earlier in June titled 'Tudum Teaser.' The trailer saw snippets of Goldberg confronting a few ghosts from his past and interlocked in some intense situations. Furthermore, it also saw Badgley expressing his gratitude to fans and viewers of You for keeping the show going.
Lastly, he did confirm the aforementioned matters: His character was back in New York but will be brought down. In Badgley's words, the question is who will be the person to take him down once and for all? What haunting ordeal awaits Joe Goldberg?
