Disney+'s Andor finally concluded its two-season run with a final arc of three episodes on May 13, 2025. A Star Wars prequel series to Rogue One, the show saw Diego Luna's Cassian's journey from a loner to a radicalized Rebel against the Galactic Empire.
While showrunner Tony Gilroy initially envisioned Andor as a five-season project, mapping out five years of Cassian's life before becoming the hero of the 2016 film, it was later announced that the show would conclude with Season 2. Therefore, there will not be Andor Season 3.
The Season 2 finale revealed the origins of the Death Star and the tragic fates of Dedra and Luthen, who do not appear in Rogue One. We also learned that even while Cassian suffers a tragic fate in the film, his legacy will continue to live on, as Bix is shown with their baby in the finale.
More on Andor Season 2 in our story.
Tony Gilroy initially envisoned Andor as a 5-season project
Since Cassian is a much different person when we meet him in Rogue One, his journey in Andor was envisioned as a five-season run. Tony Gilroy wanted to capture the titular hero's five-year journey before the 2016 film, and each season would depict five years in his life.
However, the time and effort one season of filming took made him reconsider his decision, and a different format was perceived. Talking to GamesRadar+'s SFX Magazine, Gilroy discussed his decision:
"We realized that I didn't have enough calories to do it, and Diego's face couldn't take the timing, because it just takes too long to make it. We were saved by Disney saying, 'Okay, if you guys can figure out a way to do it, we're into it.'"
He further discussed how the show's cast and crew could not endure a 5-year filming schedule with Variety:
"You just couldn’t possibly physically make five years of the show...I mean, Diego would be, like, 65. I’d be in a nursing home ... We can’t sign on to this forever."
While fans would have loved to see Cassian's formative journey in Andor Season 3, the show ended with Season 2. After Gilroy realized that the show could not go for three more seasons, changes were made to the format in the second chapter.
Since time was limited, Season 2 was released in four parts, each consisting of three episodes. Each trio of episodes was set one year apart and followed Cassian's journey to lead the Rebel Alliance in Rogue One.
While this was not their original plan, Gilroy was positive that fans would love the pacing and format of Season 2, and he aptly delivered on what he promised.
What has Diego Luna said about the show's conclusion?
Luna has perfectly portrayed Cassian, first as a loner in Andor and then as a radicalized anti-Imperial outlaw in Rogue One.
Talking to Men's Health, Luna discussed the show's end and the characters' journey so far:
"We were able to get to the end in the way we pitched at the beginning, and with respect not just to the story overall, but to all the characters you got to meet in that first season who need closure and need an end to their own stories."
He added:
"To me, this is the end. And not just the end, but a very graceful way to get to the end."
Gilroy and Luna's comments make it clear that the show concluded with Season 2 and will not return with new seasons.
Andor Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Disney+.
