Reasonable Doubt Season 3 explores the shocking twist from the end of last season when Toni (played by Tristan Cunningham) files a lawsuit against Lewis (played by McKinley Freeman) and Jax Stewart (played by Emayatzy Corinealdi) for the death of her baby. The year-long case strains Jax and Lewis's relationship as they rebuild their marriage after his affair with Toni. However, it is Toni’s proposal that further surprises the couple.

Toni agrees to drop the lawsuit if Lewis spends a night with her. While Jax is hesitant, Lewis understood that this was the only way to end the misery. While discussing the unexpected moment in Reasonable Doubt Season 3 Episode 2, McKinley Freeman told Variety,

“At the beginning of the season, we show some of the frustrations that they’re going through and how long it’s been. For Lewis, he’s done everything else. All he wants is for him and his wife not to have to deal with the challenge of overcoming Toni and everything else. That’s where it’s rooted. There’s a desire to have a fresh start. After all of what Jax and Lewis have been through, that’s what he’s fighting for.”

Why does Lewis consider Toni's proposal in Reasonable Doubt Season 3?

One of the more shocking moments in the previous season of Reasonable Doubt came when Jax learns about the lawsuit that Toni had filed against Lewis. Lewis and Toni had an affair. They had a baby, who, unfortunately, died prematurely due to complications. Toni is grieving, and her anger towards Lewis, though not justified, brewed on even after they parted ways. This resulted in the unforeseen lawsuit.

When we see Toni in Reasonable Doubt Season 3, she is determined to make Lewis and Jax take responsibility for her baby's death. After many discussions, the couple even decided to pay her off. But Jax was in for a surprise when she learns that Toni had increased the amount.

Above all, in Reasonable Doubt Season 3, Toni wants the couple to officially admit their role in the child's death. In truth, Toni felt that Lewis did not empathize with her pain, and this was her way of making him recognize her anguish.

Toni finally decides to settle the lawsuit 'Reasonable Doubt' Season 3, Episode 2, if Lewis spends a night with her. Jax is taken aback by the proposal. Lewis, however, makes it clear to Jax that the proposal is not for physical intimacy but to talk through the ordeal. Jax finally agrees on the condition that he must send her a message every hour and keep her updated on the happenings.

In Reasonable Doubt Season 3 Episode 2, Toni makes advances towards Lewis, but he stops her. She takes the opportunity to tell him about her struggles with handling the situation but also asserts that she does not want to cause a rift between him and Jax.

Toni is also furious that Lewis doesn't feel the same sadness. But in the morning, when she sees him crying while holding onto the child's clothes, Toni finally understands that Lewis has been going through a lot himself. They both find the closure they were seeking. She chooses to drop the lawsuit. Freeman explained that it was a cathartic experience for Lewis, who, along with Toni, finally found closure. He said,

"As humans, we just get so used to marching that we forget that we’re carrying things. Whether you acknowledge the stuff or not, it’s still heavy. For Lewis, there’s a finality that comes with life that’s difficult to articulate with someone until they’ve been faced with it. We get so busy doing that we forget to be a human being."

He further added,

"We forget to feel and be honest about how we feel about the person that we look at in the mirror. Am I becoming the person who’s capable of carrying the dreams that I like to have? That’s the thing with Lewis. It’s a human effort, and it’s based on love and building what he has with Jax while also trying to be an authentic human. Pain comes in waves, and nobody knows. But being honest when it happens is incredibly important."
