The penultimate episode of Yellowjackets Season 3 was darker than usual, and the shocking events set the stage for an explosive finale.
Yellowjackets Season 3 does not shy away from unexpected deaths/murders, and wilderness guide Kodiak was added to this never-ending list in Episode 9. While Kodiak's death itself was not surprising, given the nature of the show, the fact that Hannah killed him was totally unexpected.
In an effort to survive and make it home to her daughter Alex, Hannah brutally killed her wilderness guide Kodiak, and it is hinted that she will eventually join the young girls and embrace the wilderness to the fullest.
More on Hannah's motives for killing Kodiak in Yellowjackets Season 3 in our story.
Yellowjackets Season 3 Episode 9 saw an unexpected twist where Hannah killed Kodiak
It was actually ironic to see Kodiak, a wilderness guide who appeared to have a tough exterior and excellent survival instinct, being murdered by the sweet and naive scientist Hannah, but that's what the Wilderness and the need to survive make you do.
After being captured by the girls in Yellowjackets Season 3, 1990s timeline, Kodiak and Hannah manage to get a knife and plan their escape. But Shauna sees through their plan, and while they manage to escape from their cage, Shauna keeps them at gunpoint, asking where they got the knife from.
Hannah, who is sweet and unassuming, blames Kodiak and lies that he secured the weapon, to which he calls her a c*nt.
Hannah loses it in that moment and plunges the knife into Kodiak's eye, killing him on the spot and joining the Yellowjackets eventually. While Hannah's outburst was unexpected and sudden, it highlights the limitations a person would cross in order to survive.
Moreover, Hannah's driving force to survive is her daughter Alex, with whom she wants to reunite, so she kills Kodiak. She realizes that escaping is not an option and joining the girls is the only way to survive and make it alive to her daughter.
Yellowjackets Season 3 star Ashley Sutton opens up about Hannah's sudden decision
While Hannah's decision was truly shocking, it fits right with the show's theme of survival, showing how a person as sweet and naive as Hannah can also turn violent in the wilderness to survive.
In an interview with The Wrap, Sutton discusses her character's sudden change of heart and the driving force of her murdering her Wilderness guide in Episode 9:
''...there’s a part that’s fighting for Hannah to see Alex again, but fighting for these kids too, to save them from this experience because she knows it’s going to be traumatic for all of them.''
Sutton's comments about wanting to save these young girls from this horrific experience suggest that she will join the Yellowjackets in the upcoming finale:
''Because Hannah was so young when she had a kid, there was obviously a lot of trauma of being young and experiencing something so adult. So a lot of 8, in my mind, was connecting with all of these kids that are going through this.''
Her sympathy for the group and her connection with the young girls might also lead her down the same path in the Yellowjackets Season 3 finale.
Talking about the effect Shauan had on Hannah, Sutton notes to The Wrap. She said,
''Shauna is terrifying. She sees in the moment that the right thing to do to make it out is to show Shauna that she’s on her side. She sees that they are surviving. So the best case scenario is to side with them and then see if she can make it home. Because that is the end goal. She just wants to make it home.''
