Another murder investigation was wrapped in Hulu's Only Murders in the Building Season 4 by the crime podcast enthusiast trio of Charles, Oliver, and Mabel.
Season 4 was centered around the murder of Sazz Pataki, Charles' former stunt double and best friend. While the group encountered a lot of red herrings, the killer was hiding in plain sight. The finale of the show revealed that Marshall P. Pope killed Sazz.
This season also had a subplot in which Sazz was turning Charles' podcast into a movie titled Only Murders in the Building, based on their investigations in Arconia. This becomes central to the motive behind Sazz's murder.
Here is everything to know about the killer and the reason behind Sazz's murder from the finale of the show.
Who killed Sazz? The motive behind her murder explained
It is revealed that Marshall P. Pope, who worked closely with the trio on the script for their movie, was originally a stuntman, named Rex Bailey. He was Sazz's protege and had learned everything from her.
Marshall dreamt of becoming a successful writer in Hollywood and saw a chance in Sazz's movie script, which she had given him to keep confidential. Jealous of Sazz's immense writing talent, which he lacked, Marshall sold her script to many Hollywood studios under his alias.
However, Sazz discovered Marshall's fraud and threatened to expose him to Charles and Bev Melon of Paramount Pictures. Marshall used his hunting background and elements from the script to kill Sazz.
How did Rex Bailey kill Sazz in Only Murders in the Building?
One of the biggest mysteries for the trio in Season 4 was the timeline of Sazz's murder. Charles deduced that the time between Sazz leaving and the power surge was about 12 minutes. It is almost impossible for anybody to kill, clean the crime scene, and dump Sazz's body in the incinerator.
Given Rex's history with stunts, he used the ledge going around Arconia to reach the crime scene from the west wing, which gave him enough time to clean up the kitchen and burn Sazz's body.
The finale also saw Rex gaining the upper hand and threatening the trio at gunpoint. They were eventually saved by Jan, the killer from Season 1, who escaped prison to kill Sazz's murderer as the two were in a relationship.
Jan shot him, and thus Rex became the first killer to die on the show, with the previous ones being sent to prison.
Will Lester's murder become the premise of Only Murders in the Building Season 5?
Following the structure of the previous seasons, the show didn't end without setting a new murder for the trio for Season 5. While Oliver marries Loretta and Sazz's murder is revealed, Sofia Caccimelio approaches the trio to find her missing husband.
While the trio denied her case, citing their workload being limited to Arconia, she left cryptically hinting that her husband was related to the building. The following day, Lester, Arconia's doorman, was found dead, bleeding in the water fountain.
Only Murders in the Building Season 5 will see the characters searching for Lester's murderer. Sophia's husband's disappearance might also play a major role in uncovering the killer in Season 5.
