The recently aired eighth episode of Superman & Lois brought back a familiar face to the DC universe. Tom Cavanagh, a The Flash alum, appearing during the episode titled 'Sharp Dressed Man' as TV Journalist Gordon Godfrey. Godfrey is a TV journalist and is seen moderating a live debate on television between Lois Lane and Lex Luthor.
The choice of character for Tom Cavanagh's return to the DC universe is an interesting one since Gordon Godfrey hasn't been utilized much by the onscreen adaptation preceding Superman & Lois.
Tom Cavanagh is no stranger to the Arrowverse shows and before joining the ensemble cast of The CW show, he was essaying multiple portrayals of Harrison Wells and also contributed to Eobard Thawne of the Reverse-Flash in almost one hundred and fifty episodes of The Flash.
He has also made numerous appearances in shows such as Arrow, Supergirl, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Apart from his abilities as an actor, Tom Cavanagh has also donned the director's hat more than once and directed the show's debut season finale titled Last Sons of Krypton as well as the third season premiere titled Closer. Here's everything we know.
Tom Cavanagh's character in Superman & Lois explained
Tom Cavanagh appeared as TV journalist Gordon Godfrey in the latest episode of the ongoing final season of Superman & Lois. His character was seen moderating a debate between Lois and Lex Luthor, with the latter portrayed by Michael Cudlitz, who also directed the episode.
The character of Gordon Godfrey has so far remained majorly in the background when it comes to on-screen adaptations. He is based on the New God Glorious Godfrey, who made his first appearance in the comic's title The Forever People #3 back in 1971.
In the comic literature, he was portrayed as a charming and powerful orator who can entice people into justifying violence and mayhem. The character has made small appearances on Justice League, Young Justice, and Smallville. He was also seen in the DC Animated Movie Universe title Reign of the Superman back in 2019.
Earlier this year in May, Tom Cavanagh had first hinted that he might be a part of Superman & Lois during the FAN EXPO held in Philadelphia. He had stated:
"So the finale for Superman & Lois was taken up already, and so I said, ‘Well, I’m happy to not do it.' which was when Todd was like, ‘Well, maybe would you play a role?’ So that’s coming up for those of you that watch Superman & Lois, something that I’m happy to have done."
Furthermore, Tom Cavanagh dropped another hint about his appearance on the DC show while speaking to Entertainment Weekly, where he commented:
"It is not something you’ve seen before. I wish we could have had this character for 18 seasons. It was fun."
Superman & Lois showrunners praise Tom Cavanagh's contributions
Brent Fletcher is the co-showrunner of the CW show, and he recently came out in praise of Tom Cavanagh's talent. Speaking to TVLine, he said:
"He’s hilarious and has more energy than a 10-year-old. (The character is) not like him at all, but he can play that guy perfectly."
Todd Helbing, being the other half of the showrunner duo, added:
"It was the no-brainer of all time."
On the other hand, episode director Cudlitz appreciated Cavanagh for the actor he is, stating:
"He’s a lot of fun, he has a lot of energy, he’s incredibly creative, and he’s not afraid to throw out everything he’s done and come up with something new. He’s also incredibly supportive, so I was grateful to have him on set. He’s a hoot."
Superman & Lois season four airs new episodes on Mondays on The CW.
