Apple TV's Silo is undeniably a sci-fi adventure that brings viewers into a dark and mysterious future. The story is adapted from Hugh Howey's Silo trilogy of novels, with the events taking place inside a gigantic underground structure that stretches down 144 floors beneath the surface of Earth.
At the heart of Silo is Juliette Nichols, the main character played by Rebecca Ferguson. Initially, she seemed to be just an engineer tasked with maintaining the giant generators, but as the story unfolds, Juliette becomes the key figure.
The Dune actress has been highly praised for her portrayal of Juliette, and interstingly, he name was suggested by someone from the creative team of Silo. Yes, you read that right. Ferguson's casting journey was shared by creator Graham Yost in an interview with Awards Radar. Yost shared:
"I can’t remember if it was Apple or whoever who said, 'What about Rebecca Ferguson?' ... And this isn’t the usual business stuff of, 'Oh, I’ve always been a big fan'"
The creator and acclaimed writer continued:
"But I will say this, when I saw her first appearance in Mission: Impossible, my first thought was, 'Where the hell did she come from?' Because she is so good."
Upon hearing Ferguson's name, Graham Yost immediately remembered her work in Mission: Impossible and being blown away by her talent. He also mentioned that the actress has a perfect mix of an action star.

Creator Graham Yost revealed the casting journey of Rebecca Ferguson in Silo

The hit sci-fi series on Apple TV+, Silo is created by Graham Yost, a known writer and producer. It first dropped in May 2023 and took no time in becoming a popular show on the platform.
Following the success of Season 2, Silo was renewed for two more chapters with Season 4 serving as the series finale. As mentioned earlier, it stars Rebecca Ferguson as the lead, with other talented cast members.
In the same interview, the creator shared how the actress was finalized and what he loves about her. Yost continued in his interview with Awards Radar:
"She’s so entrancing. She’s so believable. She’s so emotionally engaging. And she can kick a*s. So it’s like that dream action star thing of she can do all of that."
He added:
"And then I found out she was Swedish... And I frankly thought that the casting people on Mission did just a brilliant job. And I guess they saw her in The White Queen, which was her first show."
Yost knew Rebecca Ferguson had starred in The White Queen, and the actress even told him not to bother watching it. Still, he felt the casting team of Mission: Impossible had done a fantastic job discovering her.
Finally, Yost and his producer, Morton met with Ferguson via Zoom meeting. They felt it went great and were optimistic, but then they received word that she had declined the role. Yost described feeling stunned and upset.
Then, things got interesting: Her agent, Carter Cohn, kept calling to inquire if the role was still available. Later on, Yost found that Ferguson herself was the one who kept tabbing in. Evidently, Ferguson just couldn’t let go of the character.
Rebecca Ferguson isn't just a great actor, but a leader too

Silo creator Graham Yost also talked about how kind Rebecca Ferguson was on the filming set. The creator learned that she isn't just a good actor, but is also a fantastic leader. Yost said in the Awards Radar interview:
"And then as it turns out, she is just a fantastic number one on the call sheet... The other actors love working with her. She loves working with them. And it’s a little bit of a love fest."
Yost mentioned that Fergurson takes her job very "seriously" and that everyone loves the process of filming with each other. However, he acknowledged a bittersweet truth — the story of Silo won’t go on forever. There is a planned ending, and that knowledge makes every day on set more meaningful.
