Since actor David Oyelowo starred as a real-life US marshal in Paramount+'s Lawmen in 2023, fans have been waiting for an update on the show's future.
Created by Chad Feehan and Taylor Sheridan, the Western drama series was initially conceived as a spin-off of Yellowstone. However, Feehan later created Lawmen: Bass Reeves, which followed the titular federal peace officer's journey in the 19th century.
While the show was a hit and received positive reviews from critics and viewers alike, there has been no announcement for Season 2. Both Oyelowo and Feehan have expressed their desire to work on the series in the future, which gives one hope that the show might return soon.
More on the show's future on Paramount+ in our story.
David Oyelowo has expressed his desire to return in Lawmen Season 2
While fans rejoice that Paramount+ has not cancelled the show yet, there has been no news about its revival since its Season 1 conclusion. However, star and executive producer David Oyelowo expressed his desire to return in Lawmen Season 2 with ScreenRant recently:
''The more people ask for more Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the sooner it'll happen, I think. I loved, loved, loved playing that role. To saddle up again is something I'm open to, so you never know.''
While Oyelowo recently starred and created the Apple TV+ comedy series Government Cheese, he is open to reprising his role as Bass Reeves.
While Feehan earlier hinted that the show might return as an anthology series, Bass Reeves can still pop in as a veteran lawman. Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Feehan discussed his plans for Reeves in the show's sophomore season:
''...Off the top of my head, the story of him [Reeves] arresting his own son is a fascinating story. There’s an outlaw by the name Bob Dozier, who he had a real cat and mouse relationship with that I’d love to explore. And then, on the home front, in addition to having to arrest his own son, he lost Jennie (his wife) at a certain point.''
Feehan's Western show could return as an anthology series in the future
While Feehan certainly has ideas for Bass Reeves, and Oyelowo is also interested in returning in Season 2, the show could progress as an anthology series, featuring many real-life Marshals and law-abiding officers on screen.
Sheridan's inclusion of real-life Marshals in 1883 (Billy Bob Thornton’s Marshal Jim Courtright) and 1923 (Jennifer Carpenter’s Marshal Mamie Fossett) suggests that he is certainly interested in exploring this potential, and Lawmen could benefit as an anthology series.
Talking about his Season 2 plans with Deadline, Feehan earlier discussed:
"If there is another season of Lawmen, it will focus on a new lawman or law woman. There are several figures in history much like Bass who deserve their day in the sun. As much as it pains me that this marriage is taking a hiatus, that is the reality."
Feehan's comments and Sheridan's interest in the genre indicate that both makers are open to exploring the show further. It is high time that Paramount+ updates the show's status. Sheridan's Yellowstone universe has brought much-deserved success and recognition to the network, which makes one hopeful that they might give Lawmen Season 2 a chance.
