Marvel fans, it’s time to prepare for the multiverse one last time! The popular animated series What If...? is back with its third and final season. And it’s bringing some fan-favorite characters along with fresh twists to the Marvel universe. The third season is set to release on December 22, 2024.

At Disney’s recent D23 panel, Marvel dropped some exciting news. Not only are some familiar faces returning, like Moon Knight, Ironheart, White Vision, and Shang-Chi, but we’ll also meet a brand-new Avengers team ready to deal with some foes.

What If...? Season 3: Release date
The third and final season of What If...? is set to premiere on Disney+ on December 22, 2024. The first two seasons had gaps of over two years between them. So, this shorter wait is a win for eager fans.
Season 3’s development started back in July 2022. So, hopefully, the production will wrap up smoothly to meet the release date.
What If...? Season 3: Cast
As always, Jeffrey Wright will return as the Watcher. After all, he is our cosmic narrator and guide through the multiverse. Wright’s performance has been a highlight in the series, and he’ll continue to observe, and perhaps interact with Marvel heroes from countless universes.
Marvel also confirmed Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight. While we’re still waiting on official word, rumors say that Dominique Thorne (Ironheart) and Simu Liu (Shang-Chi) may also voice their animated counterparts.
And that’s not all! Characters like White Vision and Red Guardian (from Black Widow) will also appear. It’s not clear if other live-action MCU stars will join, but fans can expect a mix of familiar voices and fresh talent.
What If...? Season 3: Plot
Marvel hinted at a special Avengers team joining forces to take down Gamma Monsters. This team will likely be led by Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Moon Knight, and Monica Rambeau.
In the latest footage shown at D23, fans saw Shang-Chi in a cowboy-like scene. They also saw Wong suited up in dazzling armor and Ironheart battled with what seemed like an army of Iron Legion drones.
As with past seasons, each episode will feature a self-contained “what if” story. It will give us alternate realities that let Marvel fans experience their favorite heroes in fresh ways.
Season 3 might also see the Watcher step in to assist the heroes, or even face some cosmic threats himself. In the previous seasons, he had taken a more hands-on approach. Marvel Studios’ Brad Winderbaum hinted that we’ll learn more about the Watcher’s humanity. He will become an even richer character.
What to expect from this final season?
With What If...? wrapping up in Season 3, Marvel is pulling out all the stops for the grand finale. Fans can expect bigger action scenes and unexpected character pairings. They might also possibly see a showdown that crosses into multiple universes.
Another expected return is the fan-favorite storyline of Captain Carter’s adventures as a super soldier in this multiversal version of the MCU.
Plus, Marvel is adding newer Phase 4 characters to the mix. Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and others are likely to show up. Hence, it is clear that it is connecting its animated storylines with the latest live-action releases.
