Following some of the most shocking true crime stories and interviews, I Am a Killer arrived on Netflix on October 16, 2024. The fifth season has a total of six episodes, each focusing on different crime cases.

The true-crime docuseries brings exclusive interviews with convicts like Jamel Hatcher, a man who killed his girlfriend named Danielle Boone, the month after she gave birth to their first child.

What sets I Am a Killer apart from other docuseries is that it features the confessions made by the convicts themselves, and explores more about the crimes they committed. The first episode titled Redemption, is the story of inmate Jamel Hatcher who talked about killing Danielle Boone in 2005.

Boone had just given birth to her first child with Jamel Hatcher in 2005, and little did she know that her boyfriend would murder her the next month at their apartment in Cleveland, Ohio.

The episode begins with Jamel Hatcher talking about his upbringing as he grew up in poverty and a neighborhood where dr*gs and shootings were routine. As the I Am a Killer episode progresses, it is revealed that Hatcher met Danielle Boone at 17, and unlike him, she belonged to a reputable neighborhood and a financially stable family.

Boone was aware of Hatcher's background but always motivated him to do the right things. As seen in the episode, Hatcher spoke highly of his former girlfriend and explained how she helped him chase his dreams.

Hatcher even started attending a local college to get his diploma and was focused on his relationship with Boone. The couple was thrilled to learn about Danielle Boone's pregnancy at 18 and were excited about the baby.

They welcomed their daughter Chyanne Hatcher in April 2005, and soon after that Jamel Hatcher began facing financial struggles. Following the problems, he got back to his old friends and participated in selling dr*gs.

As revealed by Jamel Hatcher in I Am a Killer, he had his friends come over to his house on May 5, 2005, and they were all taking dr*gs and drinking alcohol. After his friends left, Hatcher started waving his gun around and ranting about a disagreement with his friend. He was filled with rage and pointed the gun toward Danielle Boone.

She tried calming down her boyfriend but Hatcher didn't stop and ended up shooting her on the head. Danielle Boone died right after getting a blast on her head, followed by Jamel Hatcher's arrest the very next day.

According to his claims during trials, Jamel Hatcher alleges being drunk and under the influence of dr*gs when he killed his 18-year-old girlfriend and the mother of his daughter. As shown in I Am a Killer Season 5 Episode 1, Hatcher initially thought Boone was pretending but when he got her blood on his hands, he paused for a moment.

The day after the murder, Hatcher was arrested and remained in jail for about a month. Since there was not enough evidence to prove him guilty, Jamel Hatcher didn't face big consequences that year.

After the DNA results came out, and the police had enough evidence and Hatcher was re-arrested. He stood by the claim of being intoxicated during the time of the shooting but was sentenced to 20 years in jail in 2008 against involuntary manslaughter.

Jamel Hatcher tried to get an early release but his requests were dismissed. His life changed when he reached out to a friend JaNae' Bates who supported Hatcher's request for an early release.

The I Am a Killer episode also featured Hatcher and Bates's marriage through a Zoom meeting in 2021, which was also joined by Danielle Boone's grandparents. The couple always wanted to spend more time together, but that would only be possible when Hatcher's out of prison.

Following his efforts to become a good person who doesn't let his anger take control of him, Jamel Hatcher started "The Danielle Project" at the Richland Correctional Institution in Mansfield, Ohio, to battle toxic masculinity. He will become eligible for parole in 2025 and aims to live a clean life.

The I Am a Killer episode would be incomplete without featuring Danielle Boone and Jamel Hatcher's beloved daughter Chyanne Hatcher, who lost her mother when she was just three weeks old.

Chyanne wasn't told about the parents' story until she turned 17, she always believed Danielle Boone's mother was her biological mother. One day, Chyanne received a link to a website where she discovered a letter written by her father for her. As shared by Chyanne Hatcher in I Am a Killer:

"I was shocked, but I was mainly confused cause I had so many questions."

Chyanne first talked to her dad through the telephone and gradually came to know about him. As seen in the I Am a Killer episode, Chyanne shares a great bond with her father Jamel Hatcher.

The episode ends with Jamel Hatcher accepting what he did to his former girlfriend was a crime. He claims to have been selfish and self-centered at that time and alleges that if he wasn't drunk, Danielle Boone wouldn't have faced a tragic end.
