Unforgotten Season 6 finale ending explained: Juliet confesses to killing Gerry

In the ending of Unforgotten Season 6 finale, Juliet confesses to the murder of her husband. She narrates the whole event that took place in 2021. She tells them that Gerry had come home at 11 p.m. and was hurling abuses at her, both physical and verbal.

In an attempt to protect herself, she jabbed a paring knife that she used to cut vegetables with, on his leg, and while he was bleeding, she went to the bathroom. After it got absolutely quiet, she came out of the bathroom and saw Gerry dead on the floor. She then dismembered his body and placed it in separate bin bags.

Bought supplies with cash, canceled his meeting using his phone, and tried to blame Marty, as she knew he was the one who attacked Gerry once. She parked his car near the Thames and filed a report of him missing. Sunny and Jess believed her story until they interviewed Taylor, who, unknowingly, told them the truth about being her father's killer.

The finale of Unforgotten Season 6 introduced a shocking twist that put the detectives in a difficult position. As they went to interview Taylor, the girl told them that whatever her mother did was out of self-defense, as his father was beating her up brutally.

She tells them that she saw what was happening, which caused doubt among the detectives, as Juliet's story indicated Taylor did not know. However, the girl, who was 11 at the time, saw her father hitting her mother and grabbed a paring knife, stabbing it into her father's leg. When she confessed, Sunny attempted to inform her of her rights, but Jess stopped him from questioning her further, realizing Taylor might not even understand that her stab caused her father's death.

Sunny then asked Jess to let Juliet decide what to do, and if she is ready to serve her prison sentence and take full responsibility, they should keep quiet about what they learned from Taylor.

The detectives then visit Juliet in prison and tell her about uncovering the true truth. At the end of Unforgotten Season 6, they give her a choice: whether she wants to go on trial for killing Gerry. She would be sentenced to two years in prison for killing her husband in self-defense, or reveal the entire truth to Taylor and the prosecutor.

This could give the mother and daughter a chance to avoid being charged, as, based on the facts, Taylor might not face charges for accidentally killing Gerry. However, it would be a risk.

Ultimately, Juliet chooses to reveal the truth, and the prosecutor releases both Taylor and Juliet without any criminal charges being brought against either of them. Additionally, DI Sunny decides to pursue a new relationship, while DCI Jess chooses not to forgive her husband for his infidelity.
