Tournament of Champions Season 6 Episode 5 saw Jonathan Sawyer go against Lee Anne Wong, and the battle was brutal, but the latter ended up winning by a thin line.

The series features champions from other culinary reality TV shows, mainly the ones that have aired on FOD Network, going against each other in a single-elimination tournament. Ultimately, they are fighting for a grand prize of $150,000 this season along with other advantages.

As soon as the Tournament of Champions episode started, host Guy Fieri invited all the remaining contestants onto the podium and announced a battle between Jonathan Sawyer and Lee Anne Wong. It was a tough round for both of them because each contestant won TOC twice or thrice. Introducing Chef Jonathan, Fieri expressed,

"...Jonathan Sawyer, an award-winning chef, who returned to the main racket after winning this year's qualifiers and finally winning his very first TOC battle."

As for Lee Anne Wong, he said,

"He's going against Chef Lee Anne Wong, who has won three TOC battles, eager to add another victory to her scorecard."

Tournament of Champions Season 6 Episode 5 - Who won in the battle between Jonathan Sawyer and Lee Anne Wong?

Jonathan Sawyer, contestant on Tournament of Champions, owns a restaurant at Willis Tower in Chicago, and the food has made "Chicago Tribune's food critics swoon."

Fieri mentions that the chef has made the Esquire's list of the 40 most important restaurants of the decade, and has won the James Beard Award for the Best Chef of the Great Lakes.

Chef Lee Anne Wong has been awarded the most prestigious award in Hawaii for both a new restaurant and best brunch. She was also a 2023 James Beard best chef semi-finalist and came in 4th place during Top Chef's first season.

Before the Tournament of Champions battle rounds, the two chefs revealed that they had known each other for 20 years and had cooked together but had never had a battle. The three headed towards the randomizer, which is supposed to determine the mandatory component of each chef's dish. Here is what it said;

  • Protein - Grouper
  • Produce - Parsnips
  • Equipment - Smoking gun, later changed to meat slicer
  • Style - High-end lunch

Starting off, the chefs were given 35 minutes to finish cooking. After gathering everything they needed from the pantry, Lee Anne Wong revealed that she was going to make a pan-seared grouper with fish fumet and white wine cream sauce.

As for Jonathan, he had decided to make a grouper tostada with tomatillo salsa and pickled parsnip. Chefs Justin Warner and Tiffani Faison join the episode as correspondents.

Talking about her restaurant, Lee Anne Wong said,

"I lost my restaurant last year in the Maui fires. Where I live, it's kind of chaotic with housing and labour. This money would mean the world to me and would buy me some time, buy me some security to figure out what's next."

When the judges tasted Jonathan's dish, they loved how fried grouper is a street food, that is presented in a high-end manner. However, their only complaint was about the plating as his "swoosh."

With Lee Anne's dish, they loved the plating and the taste of the fish, and, overall, did not have a lot of complaints. Jonathan noted that the margin is "razor thin."

Ultimately, Lee Anne Wong won by 84 points for her dish while Jonathan had 83, just a one-point difference on the Tournament of Champions.

Tournament of Champions Season 6 releases new episodes weekly on Sundays at 8 PM Eastern Time on Food Network. They are instantly available to watch online on Food Network Go, Discovery Plus, and HBO Max.
