Grotesquerie is here with its season finale on FX, just in time for Halloween. Ryan Murphy's American psychological horror drama will finally conclude, but not without a final ride filled with secrets and twists.
Fans are still recovering from that coma-induced twist of episode 7 where Detective Lois was actually dreaming about the murders in her coma. But things start to get eerie when she is called to investigate the Burnsides murder, which exactly mimics the one she saw in her dreams.
The finale will be packed with twists and turns with Lois trying to grapple a hold on reality and dreams. Niecy Nash-Betts who plays Lois on the show said,
“Expect more twists and a few more turns.”
Top 7 things to expect from the Grotesquerie finale
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter about what can be expected from the finale, Ryan Murphy said:
“Yes, there’s a big reveal here in episode seven — and then there’s another one in eight and nine and 10 [the finale].”
1) Clarity between Lois's reality and dreams
Lois's reality is distorted after she learns that her pursuit of a theology-obsessed killer was part of hallucinations in her coma. This big revelation in episode 7 shocked the audience. Everything she holds about the killer's identity and Sister Megan's betrayal might just be visions from her coma-induced state.
The finale might clarify what is real and what is a dream. It might also provide hints about past events that Lois dreamed about, which might turn out completely different from her reality.
2) True nature of the characters
After the twist in episode 7, we learn about Lois's coma state. This changes our perception of the characters in the show, who might not be who they were shown in their dreams. Familiar faces might be villains or vice versa.
The biggest secret regarding this is Sister Megan, to whom Lois grew close but later ''discovered'' that she is a potential accomplice to Grotesquerie. The truth behind the true nature of Sister Megan is a significant twist to be revealed in the finale.
3) Grotesquerie's identity
The whole show is based on the murders of a theology-obsessed killer who uses religious iconographies to kill, target, and manipulate their victims. While Lois repeatedly encounters the killer in episode 5, this might also be a vision.
The true nature of Grotesquerie—whether it is a killer, a religious entity, or Lois's projection of her internal battles—is expected to be revealed in the finale.
4) Lois's struggle to survive
After she wakes up from the coma, Lois has been in a constant fight for survival, both physically and mentally. With everything she knew turning out to be a hallucination made up by her mind, the finale is expected to be charged with a lot of tension for Lois.
We have already seen her struggling in a coma. The finale will see her last attempts to save her falling family and make sense of her reality after waking up.
5) Lois's suspicions about Dr. Charlie Mayhew
We see Lois suspecting Dr. Charlie as she suggests the two have loose ends to mend. In the finale preview, we can hear her saying-
"You are not who or what you say you are."
While Dr. Charlie treated Lois in reality, he had a dual identity in her visions. He was both Father Charlie Mayhew and Mr. Grotesquerie. Since Lois's visions are turning out to be predictions of the future, the nature of Dr. Charlie will also be revealed in the finale.
6) The truth behind Ed Laclan
While Ed was seemingly missing from episodes 8 and 9, he can be seen in the finale preview. The truth behind his mullet-donning persona, Fast Eddie, with whom Lois supposedly had an affair, will be revealed in the finale.
Eddie can be seen in his clean-cut version as an orderly in the hospital, which Lois sees in her dreams. Since Lois has already woken up, seeing Eddie's dream version is confusing. The truth about him and his disappearance in the previous two episodes will supposedly be revealed in the finale.
7) Can Lois predict the future?
While above all are major plotlines that might get a closure in season 1, there is still mystery around Lois's dreams and how are they projections of the future as we saw from the Burnsides' murders.
While the show was supposed to be a limited series, its popularity and scope might just get us a new season. It is not certain that the finale will reveal exactly how and why Lois had those dreams. There is a possibility that the makers keep this a cliffhanger for a possible Grotesquerie Season 2.
Catch the finale of Grotesquerie on October 30, 2024, on FX.
