Penny and Sheldon might not have been seen together on screen since The Big Bang Theory ended five years ago. But actors Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco made their fans very happy. The adorable friends pair reunited in New York, where Jim Parsons is currently starring in the Broadway production of Our Town.
Though they have not shared the screen together since The Big Bang Theory, Kaley Cuoco voice-starred in Young Sheldon, the prequel to The Big Bang Theory based on Sheldon's childhood. Despite no credited cameos, Cuoco's character Penny has found a mention in Young Sheldon as well in the series finale when Sheldon (Jim Parsons) tells Amy (Mayim Bialik) that they shouldn't have let Penny babysit their daughter. So, we know they are an integral part of each other even today!
Sheldon and Penny: the Unusual Pair that Worked!
The Big Bang Theory is the story of four science nerds who struggle with their social awkwardness, especially when a struggling actress moves into the apartment across the hall from them. The 12-season show by Chuck Lorre remains one of the longest-running sitcoms on television and a fan favorite. Though Sheldon and Penny were not romantically paired on the show, their on-screen friendship and camaraderie were an adorable arc that fans loved.
One of the central aspects of the show was its on-and-off romantic arcs between various characters. However, Shenny (as fans call them) have remained consistent despite being drastically different personalities in the beginning of the show. Is that the reason why they are so loved? Well, it's not just one moment, though.
We bring you a list of the top 7 Shenny moments that will revive memories from The Big Bang Theory.
The Soft Kitty Magic
It is established that the only person who can get Sheldon to calm down and deal with his emotional upheavals is Penny. And she proved that in the first season itself. In the episode "The Pancake Anomaly," Sheldon realizes his friends can't deal with his unbearable attitude when he gets sick. That's when Penny comes to his aid (quite literally!). But she has to meet his demand of singing the Soft Kitty lullaby, Sheldon's childhood favorite. And she obliges. How adorable!
The First Hug
Remember how Sheldon would not even consider touching a fellow human being, let alone being intimate with them? Well, that first changed in Season 2's Christmas episode "The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis." Legendary actor and Sheldon's favorite, Leonard Nimoy, aka Mr. Spock, signs a napkin for him, and Penny surprises him with it. The fact that she wanted to get a gift for Sheldon was in itself an adorable act (given how Sheldon was), but her efforts to get an autograph were definitely an example of someone going above and beyond. Overjoyed, Sheldon hugs Penny, and, well, the rest is history.
The Flash Drive Madness
In Season 2, we were introduced to what traveling with Sheldon was really like. In the episode "The Terminator Decoupling," the guys are traveling to San Francisco when Sheldon realizes he forgot the flash drive containing his paper at their apartment. His only recourse is to ask Penny to help him. But, as we know, asking nicely is not something Sheldon does, especially with someone he considers intellectually inferior. Now, Penny isn't someone who takes his attitude lying down and messes with him. Things escalate, but Penny ensures Sheldon learns his lesson.
When Sheldon Sings "Soft Kitty"
This episode is hilarious and an absolute fan favorite. Sheldon takes Penny to the emergency room after she injures herself in her bathtub. But his behavior at the hospital, even if well-intended, makes things a bit difficult for Penny to handle. Nevertheless, Penny, being Penny, knows where Sheldon is coming from. And we see her seizing the moment when they get back to her apartment, and she asks Sheldon to sing "Soft Kitty" for her. The entire episode "The Adhesive Duck Deficiency" is so goofy that it brings a smile to your face each time.
The Penny Blossoms Idea
Another aspect that connected Sheldon and Penny was their willingness to help each other based on whatever little they knew or could do. So, in the episode "The Work Song Nanocluster," when Penny comes up with the idea of making flower hair barrettes, Sheldon gives her some realistic money advice. He even helps her by creating an entire process and gives her ideas on production, improving sea shanties. It works for Penny, and she even makes a first-day sale. Together they introduce the internet to Penny Blossoms. A friend in need is a friend indeed, right?
Sheldon's Suit Show
Sheldon always dressed in childish clothes, while Penny was a diva almost always (except when she was waitressing). No wonder then that her fashion sense helped Sheldon a great deal in picking out a suit to wear for a conference in the Season 3 episode "The Pants Alternative." Penny repeatedly rejects Sheldon's absurd decisions until the black suit entered the room. The reactions of Shenny with that dapper suit are not to be missed. Definitely one of the standout moments of their friendship. Of course, that checkered suit wasn't all that bad, but that's a story for another day.
When They Miss Leonard
Alright, so many fans did not enjoy "The Hofstadter Insufficiency" for the Season 7 premiere. But it did show a new, more mature angle to Sheldon and Penny's friendship. Both of them miss Leonard, who is still stuck on the research boat. Sheldon gets a nightmare and misses Leonard, but he continues hiding it while Penny does the same. However, he does make it explicit by his actions that he will take care of Penny during his absence. It's not every day that Sheldon overextends himself to understand someone's feelings, let alone empathize with their vulnerability, right?
Now, this reunion of sorts between Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco is making us nostalgic, so we are off to a quick rerun of these episodes.
