Get ready for the next adventure! The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 is returning for its fans on Prime Video on August 29. This time, you'll see some fresh faces joining the cast in season two.

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is created by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. It takes place thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The second season will be set in Middle-earth's Second Age and will explore the rise of Sauron.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 1, the Orcs call Adar Lord-father. He wants to take over the Southlands. In season 2, Sam Hazeldine will be recast as Adar after Joseph Mawle, who played Adar in season 1. Mawle left the series to explore new characters.

Who will play Adar in season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power?

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Adar is a mysterious character introduced in season 1. He's an Elf who Morgoth tortured. After Morgoth's reign, Adar aims to conquer the Southlands with his army of Orcs.

Joseph Mawle brings Adar to life, showcasing the character's bitter past and compassion for his Orcs. His performance makes Adar a compelling figure despite his wrongdoings.

Joseph Mawle left the role after season 1 ended in December 2022. He asserted that he had relished his time on The Rings of Power but felt the need to explore new personas and storylines in his career. In his X handle, he supported the cast and team of The Rings of Power before signing off.

Sam Hazeldine, who will feature as Adar in The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power Season 2, is known for his performances in shows like:

  • Slow Horses
  • Peaky Blinders
  • The Sandman

Hazeldine talked about taking over the role of Adar from Mawle, saying:

"I worked with him (Mawle) years ago. I think he’s a fantastic actor, and I really loved what he did in the first season…So it was actually a pleasure to take the baton from him. Obviously we don’t look the same, but the character is instantly recognisable."

Who is Adar, and how is his storyline significant to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2?

The season 1 finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power revealed that Sauron and Adar are separate entities and sworn enemies. Adar attempted to kill Sauron in the past and thought he succeeded. This hinted at Halbrand's identity, as he and Galadriel captured Adar during the battle between the Southlanders/Númenóreans and the Orcs. Galadriel had to calm Halbrand down to prevent him from executing Adar.

Despite being captured, Adar created a safe haven for the Orcs where they wouldn't be harmed by sunlight. His servant, Waldreg, triggered a volcanic eruption that destroyed the Southlands, turning them into the dark realm of Mordor. This leaves Adar in need of a new purpose, and his rivalry with Sauron could lead to some unexpected twists.

Sauron was last seen entering Mordor, which likely means trouble is brewing for Adar.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 will be accessible on Prime Video. The first three episodes were on Thursday, August 28, 2024. New episodes will follow every week until October 3.
