Netflix is heating up the summer schedule with The Hunting Wives, a twisty new thriller that blends small-town charm with big secrets. Set to premiere on July 21, the series brings May Cobb’s bestselling novel to the screen with a compelling cast and a story that promises obsession, betrayal, and murder — all tucked neatly behind the facade of suburban glamour.

The project started at Starz, where it was given the go-ahead in 2023 when the network was still part of Lionsgate. But the two companies parted ways in May 2025. At that point, Lionsgate Television regained rights and strategically set the show up at Netflix. This shift gives broader access to the series and extends its lifespan potential, especially since the streamer has only locked in exclusive US rights for one year.

Starring Pitch Perfect's Brittany Snow and Watchmen's Malin Åkerman, The Hunting Wives follows Sophie, a woman who relocates from the East Coast to East Texas, where she falls under Margo's spell, a powerful, enigmatic socialite. What begins as a new friendship quickly spirals into something darker, as Sophie becomes entangled in a dangerous world of seduction, secrets, and ultimately, murder.

Brittany Snow leads the series as Sophie, a woman searching for balance but drawn toward chaos. Opposite her is Malin Åkerman as Margo, the glamorous ringleader of the “Hunting Wives” — a clique of wealthy women whose lives appear picture-perfect on the outside but harbor deep dysfunction underneath.

Dermot Mulroney and Chrissy Metz are also part of the ensemble, and their dramatic gravitas adds to the weight of the cast. As showrunner and writer of the season, Rebecca Cutter (Hightown) will work alongside some notable executive producers like Erwin Stoff (The Serpent Queen) and even the book’s author, May Cobb. This combination indicates Cutter’s trademark, intense, character-centered storytelling that weaves psychological drama with other genres.

With Cutter also developing two other Netflix projects alongside Jerry Bruckheimer Television, The Hunting Wives arrives as part of a larger creative partnership, one that could elevate the series beyond its limited-series origins, especially if it strikes a chord with Netflix’s thriller-hungry audience.

The Hunting Wives will premiere exclusively on Netflix in the U.S. starting July 21, with all episodes expected to drop together. While the current deal covers just one year of exclusivity, Lionsgate is actively handling international sales — a sign that global distribution is already in motion.

This new arrangement benefits both Netflix and Lionsgate. The streamer gains a complete, high-production-value series ready to drop into its summer lineup, while Lionsgate positions the show for a wider, long-term rollout. It also sidesteps Starz’s current strategy, which leans heavily toward programming it fully owns or co-produces.

This provides an intensely personal narrative combined with the thrill of real crime, perfect for viewing in one go. The Hunting Wives may be best described as the offspring of a sinister and more perilous combination of Big Little Lies, Desperate Housewives, and such other shows.
