The production of The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 is preparing itself to bring the series to its long-awaited conclusion. Based on Margaret Atwood's best-selling novel, the show has been praised for its acting, writing, and production design, winning two Golden Globes and 15 Emmys.
The Handmaid's Tale is set in a world where women are forced to bear children for men due to globally collapsed fertility rates under a totalitarian government called the Republic of Gilead.
For the past five seasons, we've followed June's story as she tries to escape Gilead in The Handmaid's Tale. The show has come a long way since it began, shifting from a focus on survival in a terrifying world to exploring the unique journeys of Handmaids, Marthas, and Wives.
When is the expected release date of The Handmaid’s Tale?
The Handmaid's Tale was renewed in 2022, just before Season 5 started streaming on screens. But filming was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, and also because Elisabeth Moss was pregnant in real life.
According to Disney TV Group President Craig Erwich, filming resumed in the summer of 2024, and the final season was set to be released a year later. Season 6 of the show will premiere sometime during the summer or fall of 2025.
Who will be featured in the cast of season 6 of The Handmaid's Tale?
Bruce Miller, the creator of the show, left his role in March 2023. Although he will still be the writer and producer for Season 6, Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang are the new people to look after the day-to-day operations.
Ever Carradine, who plays Naomi, is now a regular on the show. The primary cast is set to return and in the final season the cast will include,
- Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne
- Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford
- Madeline Brewer as Janine Lindo.
- Josh Charles is freshly introduced in the final season.
- Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia
- O-T Fagbenle as Luke Bankole
- Max Minghella as Commander Nick Blaine
- Samira Wiley as Moira Strand
- Bradley Whitford as Commander Joseph Lawrence
- Sam Jaeger as Mark Tuello
- Amanda Brugel as Rita Blue
- Ever Carradine as Naomi Lawrence
Everything to know about The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 plot
The Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale is based on Margaret Atwood's 1985 book of the same name. The book ends without a clear resolution, leaving Offred's fate uncertain as she is taken away in a van. The show followed the book closely in the first season but has since expanded, which means it will have to end differently.
The fifth season ended with June and Serena Joy fleeing Toronto for Vancouver. After a hit-and-run attempt on June's life, her husband Luke brutally attacked the assailant, who later died from his injuries. Fearing for their safety, they decided to leave for Vancouver.
However, the authorities were already looking for Luke at the train station, so he convinced June to board the train with baby Nichole while he stayed behind. Season 6 will start right where Season 5 ended.
During an interview with ELLE in 2022 actress Elisabeth Moss from The Handmaid's Tale stated,
"I think that it's going to be a season where June is going to figure out who she is and who she's going to be for the rest of her life……The fight is not just about one individual; it's much larger than that. And I think she is, in season five, getting to that place where she's realising that. And then season six is going to be very much about that, and then about all the characters figuring out whose side they're on and what their next move is."
