The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 4, Promotion, raised an important question. Will Hannah be saved? Technically, yes, but not so soon. The Mayday rescue plan fails in episode 5, leaving Hannah still in Gilead. But in The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 4, there is a new plan formed, but we cannot say for sure if that will save Hannah.
In The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 4, Luke wants to lead a bomb attack on Gilead. Agent Tuello drops charges against Luke, and June wants them to return to Alaska for safety, but Luke is determined to lead the attack. Commander Lawrence gets promoted to High Commander and participates in a ceremony that includes a visit to Jezebel's, where he sees Janine.
As The Handmaid's Tale Season 6, Episode 4 continues, Moira decides to go for a reconnaissance mission to warn the women of the bomb attack before it actually happens. June pushes to go instead, but Moira and Luke don't want that. Luke eventually gives in and decides that he and June will go together. They share a vulnerable moment, reaffirming that they will do everything to save their daughter, Hannah.
Rita agrees to return to Gilead when Nick promises her eventual freedom. We don't know if Nick can actually get her freedom or how long it will take. But Rita decides to be patient and agrees to move back to New Bethlehem.
Will Hannah be saved by the plan formed in The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 4?
The Handmaid's Tale is adapted from the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name. Thus, it follows the novel closely, with some tweaks added to make it more suited for television.
In the novel, Hannah is not saved. She continues to live in Gilead. However, in The Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid's Tale novel, Hannah is an important character, and she does get saved and returns to her parents.
The Handmaid's Tale Season 6, Episode 4, focuses on Mayday's next plan of action. Mayday is planning another attack on Gilead. They plan to find out the list of commanders who ordered the planes of Mayday's rescue mission to be shot down.
After they have that list, Mayday intends to kill the commanders at the Jezebel's. However, the women at Jezebel's need to know of the attack beforehand so that they don't become collateral damage. Mayday works on sending a team to warn the women before the attack.
The Handmaid's Tale Season 6, Episode 4, continues with June wanting to go as a part of the warning team with Moira when she hears Janine is at Jezebel's, too. Luke and Moira are not happy with her decision, but June is determined. The plan was Luke's, and he wanted to be the one to execute it. Luke says,
''This is my chance to fight for Hannah,”
adding stress on 'my' because he wants to do everything in her power to bring the commanders down and hopefully bring Hannah back. Luke eventually agrees and says he and June can both go. They share a vulnerable moment where they agree that while times are bleak, they have to try and save their daughter, Hannah.
If the Mayday attack plan formed in The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 4 goes as planned, June and Luke might be able to save Hannah, among others. However, at the end of The Handmaid's Tale, Hannah is not rescued.
In The Testaments, Hannah is still in Gilead, and her new name is Agnes Jemima. She decides to become an Aunt to avoid being married off to an older commander. She chooses the life of an Aunt because there were rumors that the said commander killed off his wives.
Hannah, however, does learn of her real parentage and what happened to June. At the end of The Testaments, Hannah returns to Luke and June with her half-sister, Nichole.
If the show decides to follow Hannah's fate according to the novels, Hannah will not get saved through the plan hatched in The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 4 or in later episodes. She will then most likely return to her parents in the sequel series The Testaments, which is currently in the works.
Shows often do not follow novels too closely. If that happens for The Handmaid's Tale, the plan formed in The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 4 or a future plan might save Hannah.
New episodes of The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 come out every Tuesday at midnight on Hulu.
