Let us now explore in detail what happened in The Equalizer Season 5, Episode 1.
The following article contains major spoilers.
What happens in The Equalizer Season 5 Episode 1?
In the first episode of season 5 of The Equalizer, Robyn McCall and her team face challenges without Detective Dante and Mel. With both of them away, one for professional and one for personal reasons, the team now has only two people, Robyn and Harry (Adam Goldberg).
Though Dante had to leave for Los Angeles as he got promoted, his absence creates a void in Robyn’s circle of trusted associates. Moreover, Mel’s absence works as a stark reminder for Robyn with the kind of dangers that come along in their line of work.
Memory of Mel’s abduction and the trauma it caused is still fresh in her memory and along with Mel, she is also trying to process it.
Since the team is now just Harry and Robyn, their missions feel heavier. However, Robyn’s ex-husband, Miles (Chris Noth) occasionally steps in to help her, which adds a new layer of complex dynamics to their relationship.
Though Miles was once against Robyn’s vigilante work, after his second divorce, he seems to have had a change of heart. However, Robyn is not too keen to get him involved as she thinks it might harm Delilah, their daughter.
Does Robyn Sucessfuly save Kevin and Randi in The Equalizer Season 5 Episode 1?
The case of Sara Neal (Lorraine Toussaint), an unlicensed foster mother trying to save children from the abusive system she once endured herself, brings the team back into action.
Kevin, one of her children, hotwires a grocery truck to provide for her and his sister Randi. However, what Kevin and Randi do not know is that they are stealing a vehicle full of arms that has ties to an arm smuggling ring.
Despite their good intention, this action sets off a series of events that eventually leads to the arms dealers’ group kidnapping Randi. They give Kevin an ultimatum to return their truck by 8pm and threaten him that Randi will be killed.
Robyn and her team come into the scene. However, her efforts to rescue Randi are hindered by deceit as it turns out that the arms dealers’ group and their leader Diego Sueño are part of a dangerous cartel.
Things get even more complicated as Kevin ends up being another hostage as he tries to save Randi himself. Robyn races against time to retrieve that truck from the NYPD impound and negotiates with the cartel. These actions show her skills and determination to save the children.
In an unexpected manner, Dante, Robyn’s ex, despite not being present physically with them, proves to be resourceful in supplying important information about the cartel. This shows how the team’s understanding is intact despite certain changes.
Robyn’s resourcefulness is once again proved when she uses the favorite sandwich of the impound lot officer to get access to the truck. This incident adds a humorous touch to the otherwise tense episode.
In the final moments of this episode, Robyn gets captured by the cartel but is rescued by those very children she was trying to help. This cements the bond between Kevin, Randi and Robyn.
Subsequently, Robyn makes a donation to Sara to ensure that the children are being taken care of. This act once again shows Robyn’s commitment to take care of the vulnerable.
As the episode comes to an end, Robyn’s need for backup becomes evident. With Mel taking time to recover and the looming threat of the cartel, things look bleak for Robyn.
However, with her ex-husband Miles wanting to be there for her and their daughter, the episode ends on a rather hopeful note.
The Equalizer Season 5 can be watched on CBS with new episodes dropping weekly on every Sunday.
