The Edge of Sleep is a new thriller series that premiered on Amazon Prime Video on October 15, 2024. Based on the podcast of the same name, the show revolves around a night watchman named Dave who suffers from hallucinations.

One day, he finds out that everyone who had gone to sleep the previous night had died under mysterious circumstances. Mark Fischbach, aka Markiplier, who starred in the podcast, reprises his role in the television adaptation.

The series was released without a great deal of promotion, but that did not stop it from entering the top 10 list on Prime Video within a few days of its release.

All six episodes of The Edge of Sleep were released on Prime Video on October 15, 2024. The release came as a surprise since the streamer had earlier announced October 18 as the premiere date. Markiplier posted a video on YouTube confirming the early release of the series.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer, and Markiplier’s representative, Ben Curtis, revealed that it was difficult for the team to bring the show to the audience as no platform initially agreed to distribute it.

The filming of the series took place in 2021, and it took the team three years to find a distribution platform. It was eventually Mark’s determination and marketing strategy that helped them release the show. Curtis said:

“It was the same thing, ‘No.’ ‘No.’ ‘No.’ And that’s the point at which 99.9 percent of Hollywood quits, it’s over. But we knew, with Mark, you have this special ingredient that people truly undervalue — and he’s a complete genius in marketing to his fans.”

What is The Edge of Sleep about?

The show is an adaptation of the eponymous 2019 podcast. It follows Dave Torres, a night security guard who has been suffering from terrifying hallucinations since childhood. After staying awake all night for his shift, Dave learns that everybody who went to sleep the previous night, passed away.

The watchman, along with a group of survivors, then has to uncover the mystery behind the global crisis. While doing so, they have to avoid sleep so that they do not suffer the same consequences.

Meanwhile, Dave struggles with his hallucinations, which makes it more difficult for him to solve the mystery of what happened to the deceased people. The show’s official synopsis reads:

“When a night watchman finishes his shift at work, he is terrified to discover that everyone in the world who went to sleep the previous night has died. Now he and a band of survivors must stay awake and uncover the secret of this global epidemic before they fall asleep.”
