Prime Video's The Boys Season 4 ended with some major cliffhangers, sparking curiosity among viewers. The final chapter of The Boys will explore Homelander's ultimate fate, Billy Butcher's final move, and Ashely's superpowers as she anxiously injected herself with Compound V in the last season.
Since its 2019 debut, The Boys has remained a fan-favorite show, which diverts from traditional superhero stories and uncovers morally gray and corrupt superheroes. However, not every hero is as shady as Homelander, and with time, fans and viewers got to see members of The Seven like Starlight and Queen Maeve less influenced by Vought International.
The show is now heading towards its conclusion with the upcoming Season 5, and fans can expect the final showdown.
Exploring The Boys Season 5 Theories
From Homelander's potential end to Soldier Boy playing a big role in the upcoming chapter, here's what you can expect from The Boys Season 5:
1) Billy Butcher as the leading villain
Billy Butcher has undeniably experienced the greatest losses in his life, and despite being a leader, his actions are too violent to justify them. The death of his wife fueled Butcher with rage in his bid to kill Homelander.
However, season 4 revealed that he now has powers due to the usage of Temp V, giving him tumorous tentacles. He ruthlessly killed Victoria Neuman, and in the upcoming season, Butcher will be even more dark and violent.
2) Homelander's end is near
No doubt that Homelander is the reason why the world of supes has become bloodthirsty, and his control over the U.S. government now will further complicate the situation. However, season 5 is expected to feature his most awaited end, either by losing all his powers or facing death at the hands of Billy Butcher or even Ryan.
There are theories suggesting that Ryan might kill Homelander or Billy Butcher in the final season, as these father figures have been lately conflicting with him. So, eliminating Homelander makes more sense, as the emotional thread between these three figures would be severely affected.
3) Sister Sage plans against Homelander
Known as Homelander's biggest ally, Sage doesn't seem to be supporting the corrupt superhero in the finale. As seen in the previous seasons, she revealed helping Homelenader for nothing but fun.
Her Phase 2 plan might be helping Homelander gain power against all supes and highlighting his political influence. Instead of prioritizing Homelander's greed, Sage might decide to work for her true intentions by betraying him.
4) Soldier Boy and Ryan might team up against Homelander
Though not confirmed, this theory suggests that Soldier Boy and Ryan might decide to join forces to take down Homelander. The mid-credit scenes of season 4 revealed that Soldier Boy wasn't dead but was being kept by the government.
Following the events of season 3, Soldier Boy might want to settle the scores with Billy Butcher over his betrayal. However, taking down Homelander and becoming the most famous supe celebrity seems more important.
Additionally, Ryan is frustrated over Mallory and the CIA's idea to use him, so he ends up killing Mallory. His actions have significantly fueled Homelander and Butcher's actions, and now Ryan is left with fewer options to save himself.
By teaming up with Soldier Boy, Ryan may eliminate Homeander, and who knows if Ackle's character also gets a chance to take revenge on Butcher.
5) Queen Maeve's potential return
Queen Maeve is one of the members of The Seven who was believed to have died until season 4. She was revealed to be living far from chaos, where Homelander could not reach her. In season 5, Maeve could return and help The Boys in dethroning Vought International, as she has some unresolved conflicts with the corrupt organization.
In a 2022 interview with Deadline, showrunner Eric Kripke shed light on Maeve's story and said:
"We definitely won’t reach the end of the series without seeing Maeve again... for Annie/Starlight to truly grow, we needed to take away her protector."
They wanted to explore if Annie would survive without Maeve, and it worked well for the show. However, her return in season 5 could finally conclude Maeve's story arc, as she seeks to eliminate Homelander.
