Known for his leadership on Below Deck Down Under, Captain Jason Chambers is talking candidly about his recent struggle with skin cancer, a very personal health scare. The Bravo personality disclosed in an open interview that he found a spot on his rib, which led to a melanoma diagnosis. When specialists determined the spot was malignant and needed to be treated immediately, what had appeared to be a small issue rapidly became critical:

"As that period went on, I started researching and how was I so naïve? How did I not just see a dermatologist every year prior? That process was just so upsetting," Captain Jason shared while reflecting on the emotional toll of his diagnosis and treatment.

Jason was stunned by the diagnosis, and it also altered his perspective on his way of life. As a yacht captain who is exposed to the sun all the time, he now encourages everyone to get regular checks. Since then, Jason's condition has improved, and he is currently in remission.

Even people who appear healthy can be susceptible to avoidable diseases, as his experience serves as a sobering reminder, underscoring the importance of early identification and awareness.

The diagnosis and emotional toll

Jason Chambers, the captain of Below Deck Down Under, recently talked about his personal health issue, which left him scared after receiving a melanoma diagnosis in December 2024. It all started when he got inspired by one of his friends' cancer journeys and decided to get his spot checked:

"I thought to myself, I should go get mine checked because I haven't gotten a check for that in five years... it just felt different in my body – my intuition," he shared.
"On Christmas Eve, the doctor rang me up and said, 'Listen, we've just got to do one more cut out, but it should be [a] five percent chance of it not returning.' But it really, well, gee, it shocked the hell out of me," Jason revealed.

When medical professionals found a worrisome spot on his rib, what had begun as a normal checkup took a severe turn. Melanoma, a potentially fatal type of skin cancer, was the diagnosis.

Recovery, remission, and raising awareness

Thankfully, the cancer was caught in time. Although Below Deck Down Under star is currently in remission, the encounter changed his outlook. He now makes routine skin examinations a priority and speaks out against sun exposure and early detection. Jason laments not being more cautious earlier in life because he grew up in Australia, where skin cancer is common.

Jason is now utilizing his position to encourage his followers to pay attention to their health and prioritize seeing a dermatologist once a year. His tale serves as a potent reminder that intuition can save lives.
