Survival Mode, NBC's latest docu-series, which features true stories about real-life disasters, will air its ninth and final episode on September 1, 2025, at 10 p.m. The episode will feature the unforgettable tragedy of January 2012, when a ship sank underwater in the Mediterranean Sea, leading to the death of 32 people.

The docu-series, a joint production from NBC News Studios and the producers of Dateline, re-told the gripping and tragic tales of nine such catastrophes through the perspective of people who lived through them. Premiering on July 7, Survival Mode has featured many terrifying disasters from the past decades, including the Joplin Tornado, the Maui Wildfires, Superstorm Sandy, and the Kentucky Floods.

In an interview with TV Line, the president of NBC News Studios, Liz Cole, described the docu-series as:

''These are gripping, uplifting accounts of everyday people facing unthinkable danger and finding the strength to overcome it. The series celebrates quick thinking, resilience and the incredible ability to make it through extraordinary circumstances.”

Survival Mode Episode 9, titled The Sinking of the Costa Concordia, will air on NBC on Monday, September 1, 2025, at 10/9c p.m. The episode will also be available to stream on Peacock, NBC's official streaming service, the following day, ie, September 2. All the past episodes of the docu-series are also available on Peacock.

Episode 9, the final entry in Survival Mode, will feature the harrowing maritime disaster of the vessel Costa Concordia, which sank underwater in January 2012. Like the previous episode, the upcoming entry will also feature harrowing re-tellings, interviews, and archival footage from this unforgettable tragedy.

Survival Mode Episode 9: All about The Sinking of the Costa Concordia

The final installment in NBC's docu-series will feature one of the most harrowing sea tragedies in 2012. The official synopsis of the final episode in the docu-series reads as follows:

As an elegant cruise ship goes down, a family desperately tries multiple ways to abandon ship, a couple's lifeboat free falls into the sea, and two entertainers are forced to navigate the chaos in search of a way to survive.

The incident dates back to January 2012, when a seven-year-old Costa Cruises vessel, Costa Concordia, was on its cruise journey around the Mediterranean Sea. On January 13, the ship deviated from its planned route to perform a sail by salute for the people on the Island, when it sailed a little too close to the shore than needed. This marked the beginning of NBC's upcoming tragedy, which led Costa Concordia to list and then partially sink.

After a six-hour rescue mission, while a majority of the passengers and crew were rescued from the sinking ship through helicopters and motorboats, 32 people tragically died, including five crew members.

The upcoming episode of Survival Mode will feature interviews with the first responders and survivors who lived through this tragedy. The synopsis suggests that the episode will feature many unforgettable tales from people through different walks of life, whose lives were tragically bound together in this terrifying sea disaster. Additionally, you can also expect archival footage, retelling multiple stories of resilience.
