Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set to release in early 2026 on Paramount+.
The first teaser for the same was revealed during the San Diego Comic-Con 2024. It reportedly revealed the Starfleet Academy's newest class of cadets studying at the historic Academy, alongside a glance into the Academy's future timeline and main stars, including Holly Hunter's Chancellor Nahla Ake.
In the midst of all the anticipation, news has surfaced concerning Mary Wiseman's cherished character, Lt. Sylvia Tilly, whom many assumed was the bridge between Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Tilly's trajectory throughout Discovery, mostly in Season 4, where she is the acting professor at the Academy, made her a potential star in the upcoming show.
But TV journalist Matt Mitovich, prompted by TrekMovie's Laurie Ulster, had the scoop that Wiseman will appear only as a one-episode guest star on Starfleet Academy.
Will Mary Wiseman's LT Sylvia Tilly be showing up on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy?

A fan favorite character from Star Trek: Discovery, namely, Lt. Sylvia Tilly by Mary Wiseman, will appear on the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Contrary to the early speculations, Wiseman will not appear as one of the central figures in the show. Instead, she will appear only as a special one-time guest star in just one episode.
This news was delivered by TV journalist Matt Mitovich, who revealed the information after a prompt from TrekMovie’s Laurie Ulster. ScreenRant quoted Mitovich as saying:
“You can rest assured that Wiseman will appear on Starfleet Academy as a guest star in one episode.”
The initial build-up to Star Trek: Starfleet Academy had strongly hinted that Tilly would be the bridge from Discovery to the new series. In Discovery's fourth season, the story arc for Tilly had her transforming from the cheerful Starfleet officer on the USS Discovery to one commissioned as an educator at Starfleet Academy. She was given the task to train the first-ever cadet class produced in over a century since The Burn, an apocalyptic occurrence that redefined the universe from the Star Trek universe.
Interestingly, the episode titled All Is Possible served as a type of backdoor pilot by highlighting the setting from the Academy together with the cadets before supposedly establishing Tilly as the inevitable star for this upcoming series. From this premise alone, most assumed Starfleet Academy would follow Tilly.
In direct defiance of these narrative nudges, the direction of Starfleet Academy took an interesting detour. The series will reportedly focus on the established leads, such as Holly Hunter as the Chancellor of the Academy and Paul Giamatti in an unknown but important role, and also holographic Doctor by Robert Picardo and Tig Notaro as Commander Jett Reno.
The changes in storyline priorities could be one of the reasons why the narrative is not focusing on Tilly anymore. Some outlets even cite scheduling conflicts as one of the reasons.
What do we know about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy so far?

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set in the 32nd century, well over 100 years from The Burn, which radically changed the Federation and its operations. The show centers around the first new class of Starfleet cadets joining the Academy in over 100 years, tracing their training, development, and entanglements as they are set to become Starfleet officers.
The science fiction concept provides the show the freedom to branch out into new regions of the Star Trek universe, examining the ideals, the politics, as well as the interpersonal relations within the Academy.
The story revolves around a diverse group of cadets from all races, humans, Klingon, Betazoid, and also entirely new aliens like the Dar-Sha and the Kasqians, a holographic species. The cadets must pass through stern testing as well as ethical debates where their dedication, abilities, and beliefs are put to the test.
Holly Hunter stars as the firm but experienced Chancellor of the Academy, the monitoring guardian over this new generation, while Paul Giamatti plays an undisclosed role around one of the cadets' heritages, heightening the tension of the story.
Legacy characters also feature in the show, catching up with past Star Trek series. Robepic Piccardo reprises the holographic Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager, and Tig Notaro reprises Commander Jett Reno, joining up the familiar themes and fan favorites from the past Star Trek with the new cast and premise.
The series will feature coming-of-age drama as well as the familiar Star Trek exploration of morality and cooperation among species. The official teaser trailer from the San Diego Comic-Con 2024 introduced audiences to the bright, future environment of the Starfleet Academy and the mission of the cadets.
The trailer promotes the Academy as an ambitious and hopeful environment despite the chaos that The Burn brought.
