The Big Bang Theory's popular spin off show, Young Sheldon, has grown to such a level that the show has garnered quite the fanbase for itself. The show follows the story of the childhood of Sheldon Cooper, The Big Bang Theory's eccentric yet beloved theoretical physicist.
The show centers around his life growing up in Texas with his family - his parents, siblings, and Meemaw. However, one of the key details about Sheldon's father that we hear in TBBT is that he was a drunkard who had often cheated on his wife before his death. But the version that fans get to see in Young Sheldon portrays the character in a much different light.
In fact, the character went on to become so beloved that the creator, Chuck Lorre even revealed that he felt really bad about the early executive decision that had been taken to kill off George Cooper Sr. in the show, to maintain coherence with the original storyline.
"Eighteen years ago, when we were writing and producing 'The Big Bang Theory,' it seemed like a good idea to imagine that Sheldon's childhood was deeply disrupted by the loss of his father. No one could have thought that someday we would regret that decision. That someday is now."
Speaking about the same, he revealed that they realised that they had made an error with this decision when they were filming the death, and almost the entire crew was in tears.
"There were a lot of tears on stage when this episode's last scene was shot. A reminder that we had all fallen in love with a fictional character. Which is, itself, a reminder to love the characters in our life who are real. To do otherwise, is to live with regret."
Although George Cooper Sr becomes one of the most beloved characters in Young Sheldon, it is understandable that it was necessary to kill his character to maintain coherence with the original storyline of The Big Bang Theory.
Contrary to his portrayal in The Big Bang Theory, George Cooper Sr. was quite a good father in Young Sheldon
The Big Bang Theory portrayed George Cooper Sr. as a drunkard who had no care or regard for his children, and had cheated on his wife multiple times during the course of their relationship. However, the portrayal is vastly different in Young Sheldon.
Sure, George loves his Lone Star Beer in the show, but he loves and cares for his family even more. He is portrayed as the typical father who finds it difficult to connect with his children without his wife's support, but that does not mean he does not try.
In fact, throughout the various seasons, the show captures multiple such moments where George Cooper Sr. shares moments with his children that end up turning into core memories for them - be it taking Missy for her first fancy dinner at Red Lobster, or teaching her baseball, or teaching Georgie valuable lessons about the regard he should have for money and the work his mother does around the house. Moreover, even though he does not fully understand Sheldon's interests, he does his best to participate in them, even driving him halfway across the country to attend a science seminar.
Beyond his children too, he is seen sacrificing his career on multiple occasions just to keep his family happy, and even though he shared a love-hate relationship with Connie, he always looked out for her.
With behaviour like this, it is no surprise that George Cooper Sr. went on to become one of the most beloved characters on Young Sheldon, and it makes sense for Chuck Lorre to regret killing the character later on.
All seasons of Young Sheldon are available to stream on Netflix.
