As Shetland returns for Season 10, the skies over Scotland are once more cloudy. This season of the BBC's long-running crime drama has been marked by an island tension that is nearly as thick as the fog over the cliffs of Lunniswick. The show continues to perfect the art of cozy bleakness.

Alongside Alison O'Donnell's DI Alison "Tosh" McIntosh, Ashley Jensen returns to her role as DI Ruth Calder. Jensen's Calder (who brought a quiet agony to the show after Douglas Henshall left) is currently working with Tosh to investigate the murder of an elderly woman in a small village where everyone knows too much and says too little.

Jensen implied that "this series is the best storyline out of the three I’ve been involved in," and it looks like she may be 100% right. On the Isles, nobody remains undiscovered, so be ready to find secrets under the peat!

What to expect in Shetland Season 10?

Season 10 draws Calder and Tosh into the murder of Eadie Tulloch, a retired social worker found dead outside her home.

This episode is shot in the fictional village of Lunniswick, which is brought to life by the real village of Levenwick. While it begins as a homicide, the situation becomes a case of local estrangements and old wounds that don't heal.

As the detectives uncover the tensions in the community, their own partnership gets strained. Tosh's trust in her friend Billy McCabe (Lewis Howden) falters as his ties to the case come under scrutiny. Meanwhile, Calder finds herself drawn to the victim's estranged son, Ed Tulloch (Stuart Townsend). Their connection blurs the lines between empathy and emotions.

Ashley Jensen described Calder in Shetland Season 10 to the BBC as "settled (...) still solitary," while Alison O'Donnell teased that Tosh is "losing her religion" when her moral compass is tested.

And as O'Donnell puts it,

"It is rich in history, relationships and secrets which I really loved as a central focus of the mystery. There was (...) so much to unpack."
