On Call, the police drama released on Prime Video earlier this year, will not return to the platform for future seasons. Despite a promising start, the streamer has canceled the show after just one season. The news disappointed fans who had been looking forward to seeing more of the characters and the cases built around the Long Beach Police Department.
The decision not to move forward with On Call comes after detailed conversations between the producers and the streamer. Prime Video initially approached the producers with a plan to renew the series for two seasons. But due to tightening budgets, the plan was changed. In the end, the show didn’t make it past its first season, even though it did quite well in its first season.
On Call might return on another platform
Prime Video's cancellation of On Call may not be the end of the show. According to sources, the show is in talks with other streamers for the potential continuation of the show. Deadline reports that Peacock has shown interest, and other buyers may also come forward. It’s unclear whether a deal will be made, but fans are hopeful. For now, the show’s future is uncertain.
On Call was produced by Amazon MGM Studios in partnership with Wolf Entertainment, the company behind long-running hits like Law & Order and Chicago P.D. The series was created by Tim Walsh, who also served as showrunner. Legendary producer Dick Wolf executive produced the show along with Elliot Wolf and others from Wolf Entertainment.
The series starred Troian Bellisario as Officer Traci Harmon, a seasoned patrol officer in Long Beach, California. Brandon Larracuente played her rookie partner, Alex Diaz. The show followed the pair as they responded to emergency calls, offering a raw, close-up look at modern-day police work.
Over the decades, audiences have greatly appreciated police dramas. However, not all police dramas are successful in making a mark. Only the ones that show true police work, diverse stories, and heartfelt moments manage to get to the top. On Call was able to do that, but not all things work out well.
Prime Video had initially committed to backing two seasons, but sources say budget cuts made it hard to justify continuing. In a rare move, Amazon gave Wolf Entertainment full rights to the first season, allowing the producers to pitch it to other platforms. This gives On Call a good chance at finding a new home, unlike many cancelled series that end suddenly.
Still, the outcome is not certain. If a new buyer like Peacock doesn't commit, On Call could end entirely after one season. That would mean several unresolved storylines. The creative team has expressed hope, but they’re also aware of the realistic challenges of reviving a cancelled show.
For now, On Call stands somewhere in between. Whether it returns with a second season on another platform or ends as a one-season story is yet to be determined. Irrespective of the show's cancellation by Prime Video, one cannot deny the impression the show made, which left fans wanting more.
While the future of One Call is uncertain, you can stream the first season of the show on Prime Video.
