Peacemaker Season 2 reveals one of the central antagonists of this season, and they are right for hating Christopher Smith

Peacemaker Season 2, which is set to start streaming on Max from August 21, 2025, will tie into the first DC movie James Gunn directed, The Suicide Squad. That's because Peacemaker murdering Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag Jr. will come back to haunt him in different ways in this upcoming season. Rick Flag Sr., Rick Flag Jr.'s father, is hunting for Peacemaker and probably even Peacemaker's entire team for revenge.

The teaser trailer for season 2 reveals that Flag Sr. is constantly trying to get hold of Christopher Smith or his team members for an unknown reason. But given his history with Christopher Smith, Rick Flag Sr., who is also the director of A.R.G.U.S., is using all the resources at his disposal to settle scores with John Cena's mercenary in Peacemaker Season 2.

Who is Peacemaker Season 2's Rick Flag Sr.?

The first time we meet Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. is in the animated series Creature Commandos. In that series, Flag Sr. reveals to Maria Bakalova's Princess Ilana Rostovic that he is still mourning his son, who died on duty. He and the princess engage in an intimate relationship. But in the end, we learn that Ilana was just manipulating him.

Therefore, when we meet Rick Flag Sr. in Superman, he is probably more weary than he was at the beginning of Creature Commandos. This is why he is probably suspicious of the Man of Steel in Superman and even arrests him at a point in the movie. But it is in the closing moments of the movie that he will probably learn who killed his son, setting the stage for Peacemaker Season 2.

James Gunn teased Frank Grillo's role in Peacemaker Season 2 during the February 2025 press event at Warner Bros. by saying:

"You take the character of Rick Flag [Sr.], who starts out in Creature Commandos as one character, goes to Superman, continues to evolve and change, and then he starts out as a protagonist of one show and ends up as basically the antagonist of Season 2."

While some may find this transformation jarring, considering Rick Flag Sr. started as a heroic figure in Creature Commandos, his role as an antagonist in Peacemaker Season 2 makes sense, because he would like to get retribution for his son's murder.

Not much is known about the upcoming second season of Peacemaker except for an important plot point: Christopher is probably trying to join a superhero team that Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner's Green Lantern are also a part of. We also learn that despite saving the world, Peacemaker and his team are not that respected by the people.
