Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 5 further thickens the Eagly mystery. This episode has a lot of implications for the beloved HBO Max DC series and the future of the DCU in general. But the seminal moment in the episode comes in the third act as Eagly and Red St. Wild have their ultimate showdown, which ends in the presumed death of the eagle hunter.
James Gunn's frequent collaborator, Michael Rooker, plays the role of the eagle hunter Red St. Wild in the third episode of Peacemaker Season 2. St. Wild came close to killing Eagly, but John knocks him out and lies to him, which the hunter believes. The hunter tells John that Eagly is something called the "Prime Eagle", i.e., killing the bald eagle might wash off the injustices against the Natives.
While the previous episode treats the "Prime Eagle" information as myth, this episode hints that Eagly might be the "Prime Eagle".
Is the Peacemaker's pet Eagly the Prime Eagle?
It is unclear. In the last act of the fifth Peacemaker Season 2 episode, Red St. Wild shoots an eagle, giving the impression that Eagly is dead. However, he is soon attacked by another eagle from behind, just as John Economos lied to Red St. Wild in the previous episode. Soon, Eagly summons other eagles to attack the eagle hunter, and just before Red St. Wild meets his end, he sees magical fire behind Eagly, and the bald eagle's eyes are purple.
If Eagly is indeed a magical bird, as the episode suggests, then the reason behind the bald eagle's affinity towards Christopher might suggest that the character is going to play a major role in the future of the DCU. James Gunn hinted at major surprises in the last three episodes of Peacemaker Season 2, which are kept a secret. When Gunn was asked about the reason behind the secrecy at the red carpet premiere of the show, the Superman director replied:
"It could mean they're terrible[laughs]. That is one option. Or it could mean that there's a lot of major twists and turns in the last three episodes. And even though I'm sending the first five to a select few, things still get out as you know. Things got out already. You know, people who want to search can be spoiled on purpose, but I really don't want what's in those last three episodes to be spoiled. And so I'm keeping them close to the chest. I won't even let my publicist see them. That's the god's honest truth. I will also say, six and eight may be my favorite things I've done, like, of all time. It's like some of my favorite stuff ever."
James Gunn hinted at a major cameo in one of the last three episodes:
In May 2025, James Gunn and John Cena sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the then-upcoming second season of the HBO Max DC show. In that interview, discussing the QUC or Quantum Unfolding Chamber's role in the DCU, Gunn teased a cameo in the last half of Peacemaker Season 2:
"You've seen what we call the QUC, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, in the first season of Peacemaker, and we see more about that technology in Superman. The QUC is the center of the story in Peacemaker season 2... We see a lot of different characters from Superman in the [season], [including] Isabela and Nathan and Sean, and then we see a bunch of other characters later on in the season from other parts of the DCU and from Superman. There might even be one really, really, really big cameo near the end of the show."
The fifth episode of season 2 is currently streaming on HBO Max. Watch it as soon as possible to learn how episode 5 pushes the story forward for the DCU.
