A British thriller on Netflix, Obsession, goes into what happens because of a forbidden romance. Adapted from the novel Damage published in 1991 by Josephine Hart, it is a breathtaking story about William Farrow, a successful surgeon. He eventually finds himself in a steamy affair with Anna Barton, who happens to be his son's fiancée.
It is set to rip their lives apart with hidden truths, funneling everything into a dark vortex. Directed by Lisa Barros D'Sa and Glenn Leyburn, this four-part series tells a story of desire and betrayal.
With Richard Armitage, Charlie Murphy, and Indira Varma in it, it promises to unlock the innermost secrets of the mind.
Who are the cast members and the characters they play in Obsession?
1. Richard Armitage plays William Farrow
William Farrow lives what would appear to be the perfect life. The man has a good wife, Ingrid, and two mature children-Jay and Sally. He is not only close to them but also takes care of them. Everything seems to crumble when he falls for Anna, Jay's girlfriend.
He has a passionate, secret romance that turns his life upside down, as he risks it all for her. As the obsession intensifies, lies pile up. This threatens both his career and family life. Richard Armitage makes the performance about a guy trapped in a mess of his making.
2. Charlie Murphy plays Anna Barton
There's Anna Barton - a woman not at all without secrets. She's Jay's girlfriend, balancing government work with her private life. However, things go awry when she starts an affair with Jay's father, William, and her past begins to surface.
Through the series, we can see just how complex Anna is, molded from her history. Played by Charlie Murphy, Anna is one of those characters who can come across as vulnerable yet alluring.
3. Rish Shah plays Jay Farrow
Jay Farrow is sincerely in love with Anna and is considering proposing to her. He wishes that his father, William would love him more, not knowing that Anna and William are having an affair. As Jay's cynicism grows, everything starts falling apart. He's determined to find out what's going on.
From Ms. Marvel and Do Revenge, Rish Shah has proven his mettle as an actor.
4. Indira Varma plays Ingrid Farrow
Ingrid Farrow is a doting wife and a caring mom to Jay and Sally - putting family first in everything she does. She's delighted to have Anna in her life but, pretty soon, things start not to add up. Throughout the series, Ingrid embarks on the difficult path of finding her husband cheating on her and facing its emotional mess.
Indira Varma, best known through the Game of Thrones series and Obi-Wan Kenobi, achieves the correct balance between the power and composure required in situations where Ingrid has to face family-related issues.
Supporting characters in Obsession
Anil Goutam plays Edward, who in essence is William's right-hand man and thus forms a part of his work life. As a fellow surgeon, Edward represents the successful career William stands to forfeit because of his obsessive fling with Anna. Although Edward is not aware of William's troubles, having him around reminds William of everything he stands to lose. This underlines the difference between success in his professional life and the fiasco in his personal life.
Marion Bailey plays the role of Anna's mom, Elizabeth Barto. There's much about Anna's complicated past explained through their rocky relationship. It is through Elizabeth that we see Anna's family issues influence her choices. Having Elizabeth in the series certainly clarifies questions about Anna's character by giving us a glimpse into her emotional battles.
Sonera Angel plays Sally Farrow, the daughter of William and Ingrid, and she captures that innocence lost in all the family drama. You can tell how her dad's decisions affect her and the emotional mess that comes from his obsession.
Pippa Bennett-Warner plays Anna's good friend, Peggy Graham. She's always ready to pour out her soul for Anna and support her through all the emotional highs and lows as the affair becomes increasingly dangerous. She highlights Anna's vulnerabilities and how wrapped Anna is in this romance.
