Netflix unveiled the trailer for its upcoming documentary, which will take viewers behind the scenes and inside the production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a prequel play to their hit sci-fi show Stranger Things. The release date for the same is scheduled for April 15, 2025.

The documentary titled “Behind the Curtain: Stranger Things: The First Shadow” will give fans an exclusive sneak peek at the opening night of the play's West End production in London.

The official synopsis of the documentary reads as follows:

“With special behind-the-scenes access, follow the cast and crew of Stranger Things: The First Shadow as they race against time to prepare the ambitious, boundary-pushing stage show for its West End debut amid mounting fan and critic anticipation.”

Following the success of their sci-fi series, the Duffer Brothers adapted one of their prequel stories into a play, which Kate Trefry and Jack Thorne co-wrote. The play was directed by Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin and officially premiered at the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End in December 2023.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow documentary trailer unveiled

The Duffer Brothers took a leaf from their Stranger Things stories and created this play for London's West End. As seen from the documentary trailer, it is the 'origin of the Upside Down.

The story of the play follows the Creel family, who shifts to Hawkins, Indiana, in 1959 with their teenage son Henry. who later became the villainous Vecna in the parent show). Henry soon starts realizing that the nightmarish incidents occurring in his small town are connected to him.

In an interview with Deadline, the Duffer Brothers expressed their awe after watching the play for the first time:

“The first time we saw the play, we were blown away. They pulled everything off, and then some. It was one of the most thrilling experiences of our lives.”

Now, Netflix's new documentary will take the series' fans on an adventurous ride on the production of the play. Interestingly, the documentary announcement comes days before the play's big Broadway debut.

After its West End success, the play was announced for a Broadway debut in August 2024. Previews were already shown on March 28, 2025. The prequel play will finally open in Marquis Theatre on April 22, 2025.

In addition, the Duffer Brothers' critically acclaimed series will conclude with Season 5 this year, giving characters a fitting and emotional conclusion.
