The Handmaid's Tale returned to Hulu with its sixth season, and Elizabeth Moss has been the director for four episodes of the season.
On Watch What Happens Live, Elizabeth Moss spoke about the troubles of directing herself in The Handmaid's Tale. She also spoke about how she would feel if asked to be a part of a Mad Men reboot.
Elizabeth Moss on Working on The Handmaid's Tale as a Director
Recently, on Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen asked Elizabeth Moss how it felt to direct herself in The Handmaid's Tale.
Moss responded,
“I’m pretty cold about it, in the sense of, I give myself options,”
Moss highlights a crucial aspect of directing when one is directing oneself: one's dedication as an actor should not be altered by also being a director. Moss elaborated further,
“If I think I need to do something else, I do it again. I’m not emotional about it all. I think the hardest thing is making everybody wait while I watch it to make sure it’s OK because it feels obviously incredibly narcissistic to be sitting and watching your...”
Andy Cohen asks,
''But don't other directors...?''
Moss clarifies how she feels it is narcissistic because,
''Yeah but when you're watching yourself...''
Andy understands what she means and nods,
''Of course, yeah yeah yeah...''
Right after, Andy Cohen shares a small detail from shooting that very episode of Watch What Happens Live,
''I will point out, she wanted another take. Or she said, ''I could've used another take for my Sutton Stratt.'' but we thought you were perfect.''
The conversation ends on a humorous note, and we can tell how much of a professional Elizabeth is. The fact that she was so dedicated to a short impression performance that she suggested a second take reveals her noteworthy work ethic.
Elizabeth Moss was also asked how she would like to play Peggy Olson once more if there were to be a Mad Men reboot.
She responded by saying,
“Thank you for wanting that... I would never say, ‘No,’ to anything like that. I’m not one of those people that’s like, ‘I want to move on and do….’ Mad Men is one of the greatest things I’ve ever done and will ever do... I would be super happy to play that character again. I loved playing her.”
The first three episodes of The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 were released on 8th April on Hulu. The remaining episodes will be released on Tuesdays on Hulu and will be available to stream on the same platform.
