An exclusive report by The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Amazon MGM's spy series Citadel is delayed for Season 2, and its many spin-off series are on hold indefinitely.
The show, created by Josh Appelbaum, Bryan Oh, and David Weil and executive produced by Joe and Anthony Russo, was hailed and marketed as an enormous project, Amazon's equivalent to James Bond. However, the show faced numerous roadblocks in Season 1, and now the franchise's future is also in danger.
THR report confirmed that Citadel Season 2's release date has been pushed to Spring 2026, while it was earlier planned for Fall 2025. In addition, all spin-offs are being withheld, at least until Season 2's release and performance.
The spy series, which debuted in 2023, stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as two agency spies trying to fight against all odds and take down the monstrous Manticore syndicate.
The show is Amazon's second-most expensive project, completed with a budget of about $160 million. However, reshoots and two competing shots added $75 million to this already enormous budget, making it even more expensive for the Studio.
More on the franchise's future in our story.
Citadel was envisioned as a global project for Amazon MGM
Citadel was envisioned as a Global project by former Amazon MGM head Jennifer Salke, who approached the Russo brothers. After Season 1, two spin-offs titled Italy's Citadel: Diana and India's Citadel: Hunny Bunny were released earlier, and they performed decently in their respective markets.
However, neither Citadel nor its spin-offs could create the impact they promised or the budget invested in them. In addition, the news of Salke departing from her position at Amazon and Season 2's delay hints that the franchise's future is in danger.
A source from MGM tells THR:
''[they are] unhappy with what they have seen so far of season two''
The mixed reviews and ratings of Season 1 and the two spin-offs are a reason to worry, and Amazon is no doubt rethinking its efforts and investment in the franchise. While Season 2 got an early greenlight and wrapped shooting in November 2024, Season 2 looks like the beginning of the end.
In addition to the huge budget crisis over Season 1, there were reported tensions and disagreements between the Russo brothers, Appelbaum, and Oh, which further jeopardized the franchise's future.
Following this drama, the franchise's other envisioned spin-offs, earlier announced to set in Mexico and Spain, are off the table until the Season 2 release.
