According to the latest reports, two recent hit Prime Video thrillers Countdown and Butterfly have both been canceled shortly after their first season. The move comes in an unprecedented turn of events, as there have been lots of speculations on the second season of both shows that feature a star-studded lineup.

Jensen Ackles' starrer Countdown premiered earlier in June this year, followed by Daniel Dae Kim's Butterfly, which reached Prime Video in August. Per Deadline, both the top streaming shows' future is now uncertain, especially for Derek Haas' l that concluded with a cliffhanger finale.

Prime Video cancels Countdown and Butterfly after one season

Amidst multiple renewals including Maggie Q's Bosch spin-off Ballard, Prime Video's latest cancellation comes with some disappointment. Daniel Dae Kim's spy thriller Butterfly also ended on a cliffhanger, and per Deadline's latest reports, a lot of questions remain as to who attacked Enuju and what lies ahead for David Jung.

On the other hand, Countdown Season 1's intense finale leaves us pondering upon Agent Amber Oliveras' fate, who was last seen running into the woods with the killer trying to hunt her down with his gun. With promising storylines and ensemble casts, the two Prime Video thrillers looked quite promising, and despite mixed reviews, both shows gained popularity shortly after their releases.

However, the top streaming platform has maintained the online buzz with its recent renewals of Overcompensating and We Were Liars for second seasons. While the Jensen Ackles thriller Countdown is Derek Haas' original creation, Butterfly is a spy thriller based on Arash Amel and Marguerite Bennett's graphic novel going by the same name.

Both shows have been developed by Amazon MGM Studios, with Butterfly being a joint venture between Boom! Studios and 3D. On the other hand, Countdown is a collaborative creation of Derek Haas Studios and Jax Media.

The story of Countdown revolves around a federal task force that consists of skilled officers from various law enforcement departments, and the team is led by Eric Dane's character, Special Agent Nathan Blythe. Jensen Ackles, though not the main protagonist of the show, remains at the very core of the story while playing the role of an energetic, humorous, and sharp LAPD Detective Mark Meachum.

The task force is recruited to eliminate a potential nuclear threat on the city of Los Angeles and the story shifts mid-season after the team reunites for their second mission focusing on a singular entity - a killer that hunts from the shadows. Daniel Dae Kim starrer Butterfly also delivers a promising story at the center of which is an ex-U.S. intelligence operative named David Jung (played by Kim) whose life goes upside down once he re-establishes a connection with a spy organization that was his brainchild.

But the twist in the story is that his daughter is now a part of the group, and the life that David had once abandoned to protect his family comes back to haunt him. Butterfly is about David's journey to uproot Caddis and put an end to all his troubles.
