Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black in the original Harry Potter series, is interested in returning to the magical world in HBO's new TV series. The show has cast an open casting call for its main child stars, leaving fans curious about who will be cast as the adult characters.

Speaking to IndieWire, Gary said at the 76th Primetime Emmys Awards ceremony on September 15,

“I would bet my money that they will get a whole new cast of people. Maybe in a few years, I could do Dumbledore."

It’s hard to believe that almost 15 years have passed since the last franchise movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, aired. Gary Oldman's character, Sirius Black, died in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 2007.

Now that so many years have passed, it is almost impossible for the old cast to reprise their roles in the new series. Gary Oldman may join the new series, not as Sirius Black, but he can play a new character.

Gary Oldman joked that he's still technically on the wish list to play Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, like in the old films. It's just at the right age, coming up at 66 for the role.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced back in April that the books would be made into an all-new TV series. The show will premiere in 2026 and feature seven seasons, each representing a book. The minds behind the HBO series Succession, Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, will be the masterminds behind the new Harry Potter series.

Casting announcements are nowhere in sight yet, but Warner Bros. recently called for actors to play Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The production is still in the development stage, and apparently, they might go with an entirely new cast.

There is not much information yet about the new "Muggles" and "Wizards," except that Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black, seems interested in the HBO series.

Gary Oldman’s past character in the Harry Potter movie

Gary Oldman joined the franchise in 2004. He was Harry's godfather, Sirius, in the film and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He last appeared as the character in the movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 2007.

Recently, on the red carpet, Gary was asked whether he would be up for doing Sirius Black again in a new adaptation. He said he has not been approached by anyone yet, but he is still in love with the character. Though in love, he feels like his character has been underutilized.

During the same interview with IndieWire, he said,

“I love, Sirius. He wasn’t in it enough. He turned up and then he went through the veil.”
