Netflix has officially dropped a new poster for the final season of You, which has fans in a tizzy. Season 5 is scheduled to come out on April 24, and this final season is sure to be a haunting end to Joe Goldberg's evil story.
The newest promo media hints at returning to the origins of the show—both thematic and narrative-wise—by getting Joe (Penn Badgley) back into New York City, where his sinister fixation had first started.
The new poster, along with recently published set photos, is a look into Joe's history as he tries to reconcile his apparently flawless life with his murderous urges. But can Joe change? Or will he always fall back into his habits?
As Tudum reports, Badgley has said that the return to Mooney's bookstore was a very nostalgic experience, not only for Joe but also for him as an actor.
Badgley said:
“Returning to the Mooney set on these stages was particularly poignant because this is where we shot Gossip Girl. So it was creating new memories but with something that is already also quite iconic.”
Joe Goldberg faces dark temptations in You Season 5
You Season 5 finds Joe trying to lead a reformed life—at least on the surface.
Married to Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie), Joe is in the upper crust of New York society, running the Lockwood Corporation and nurturing his son Henry.
Executive producer Michael Foley informed Tudum,
“Joe and Kate are adulting in a way... he loves this current life so much that he’s willing to resist any impulses that might rock the boat.”
Still, Joe's demons don't remain buried for long.
Bronte (Madeline Brewer), a bohemian playwright, arrives and threatens to blow Joe's nicely spun facade apart, much like Beck in You Season 1.
As co-showrunner Justin W. Lo hinted, this season's must-answer question is:
“Can he be the old Joe and the new Joe?”
This tension propels You Season 5 forward.
Although Joe thinks he has moved on, his past atrocities might haunt him. Complicating matters is the arrival of Kate's ruthless siblings, who are jockeying for power over the family empire.
“He’s very much in a pit of vipers,” Foley warned
This suggests that Joe's struggle to stay alive won't be purely mental—it'll also entail deadly power struggles at the Lockwood household.
Return to Mooney’s and the symbolism of the glass cage
One of the talking points among fans is Joe’s return to Mooney’s bookstore, a setting that holds deep meaning in You's twisted lore.
The Season 5 poster hints at this nostalgic yet foreboding backdrop, while Reddit users point out the reappearance of Joe’s infamous glass cage. Locked in his cage with the blood of the victims he murdered, they theorized, speculating that Joe would perhaps get poetic justice in the location where it began.
For Badgley, returning to the Mooney's set was a dreamlike experience.
“My first memory of stepping into Mooney’s [in Season 1], the space felt big and new, and obviously now it just doesn’t feel that way to me. It’s very familiar, and it feels smaller,” he told Tudum.
This change in attitude reflects Joe's transformation on You—once a faceless predator hiding in the shadows, he is now a public figure, subject to the judgment of social media and high society.
Lo added,
“That’s something fun for us to explore. Now that he is well known in New York, social media is on him.”
As You speeds towards its finale, the question is: Will Joe finally face justice for his crimes, or will he again manage to escape through the cracks?
One thing is sure—his tale is back again in the city where it all started.
You Season 5 premieres on Netflix on April 24, 2025.
