Dexter: Original Sin, which was initially renewed for a second season, was unceremoniously cancelled by Paramount, leaving the fate of the overall franchise in the dark. It seems like the show hasn't moved away from this tragic fate, since the other follow-up projects that were planned by the creative team have reportedly been scrapped or paused indefinitely.

The update comes from Clyde Phillips, who was the showrunner for the first four seasons of the original series. He later returned to work on two follow-up projects, New Blood (2021-2022) and Resurrection (since 2025), besides a spin-off series, Original Sin (2024-2025). The 2024 show followed Patrick Gibson playing the titular character, instead of Michael C. Hall.

Sadly, the show was scrapped from Paramount's schedule in August 2025, not long after it was renewed for a second season. That put Phillips in a bind, since he had already started developing the project with his writers and actors. So, it was even more unfortunate to see it not have any future. Phillips spoke about it during his recent appearance on the Dissecting Dexter podcast. He said,

“It was a tough phone call I got that night, where they had already picked up the show. I had informed all the writers and actors, and then they unpicked it up, all while picking up Resurrection, which was no surprise. It wasn’t handled well, and I’m not happy about it.”

Phillips voiced the strong reaction of the show's loyal fans, who were reportedly disappointed with Paramount taking a U-turn on their earlier decision. IGN reports that it happened after the company's merger with Skydance, which led to many previously announced projects being shelved, including Original Sin. Despite the response from the fans or a creative interest in developing a spin-off, Phillips believes that Paramount doesn't feel any hope for the show being brought back to the screen.

Dexter spin-offs have been put on hold, according to the showrunner Clyde Phillips

During the podcast, Clyde Phillips also shared some more insights into the world of this serial killer-adjacent storyline and his wishes to continue working on it and expanding it further.

Coming back to the topic of spin-offs, Phillips says that Paramount won't be moving forward with any more follow-up projects, as per IGN. It put his team's plans to work on this franchise, similar to how Taylor Sheridan worked with the series of Yellowstone-adjacent shows. However, that may not see the light of day, as per the creator.

On the other hand, he also shared some production details for Dexter: Resurrection:

“For various reasons I can’t get into, we’re going to be shooting next Summer, we’re going to be shooting starting next Spring. The writer’s room opens on October 6th, and we will write through the holidays into early Spring and begin what we call soft prep, meaning we start planning the stages and the sets and locations. Then we begin the casting process and take it from there. We will be shooting next summer, it won’t be airing next summer.”

Dexter: Resurrection is available to stream on Paramount+.
