Kathy Bates-led Matlock premiered in September 2024 and is closer to the finale, which might unravel many secrets and tie several loose ends of this season.

In the previous episode, Matty finally found out the Jacobson Moore whistleblower, who was actually Mrs. Belvin, an administrative manager working at Jacobson Moore. The new episode, titled The Johnson Case, sees Bates’s Matty plotting and scheming against Mrs. Belvin (Patricia Belcher) to get the correct timeline for missing WellBrexa documents.

Elsewhere, the legal team is handed over a 21-year-old case after a guilty jury member comes to them after believing that they might have convicted the wrong person in the murder case of Linda Gallo.

Meanwhile, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) has been doing a secret investigation named The Johnson case, which might have revealed to her that Bates’s Matty has been faking her identity.

Matlock Episode 16 recap: Matlock successfully gets the correct timeline of the disappearance of the WellBrexa documents from Mrs. Belvin

The episode picks up from where it left in the previous episode as Matty has finally figured out the identity of the whistleblower, who happens to be administrative manager Mrs. Belvin.

Matty calls Mrs. Belvin through a burner phone that she had placed under her bench and asks her to confirm the correct timeline of the disappearance. However, Mrs. Belvin refuses and asks her to reveal her identity first.

Since Matty doesn’t want to reveal her identity, she tries another trick by telling Belvin that she will harm her pet dog, Barry, if she doesn’t pick up her call by 3 pm the next day. Belvin, to make sure Barry is protected, brings him with her to work. But this doesn’t work as she gets tricked by Matty into giving Barry to her to keep an eye on him without knowing that she is the same person who has been threatening her to reveal the correct timeline.

Matty then tells Mrs. Belvin that she has handed her dog to her friend, ‘Adam’, which finally prompts her to reveal the information that the documents disappeared at 11.30 am after a fire alarm broke. This ensured that all the doors were unlocked and the documents were stolen.

With this information, three people came into suspicion: Senior, Olympia, and Julian. Senior was eliminated from the list due to his being in Australia at that time. Matty further eliminated Olympia from the suspect list by checking into her billable hours, which revealed she was in the court at 11.30 am, leaving Julian alone in the suspect list.

Matlock Episode 16 recap: Matty, Olympia, and the team help in saving a wrongfully convicted person from further imprisonment

In episode 16, Olympia’s friend Amina, a public defender, asks her old friend to help a guilty Isabella Sanchez with a case. 21 years ago, Isabella was part of the jury that convicted Eugene, a doorman, of murdering Linda Gallo. Isabella believes that she and the other jury members might have convicted the wrong man in the murder case and has been living in guilt for the past 21 years.

Olympia and Matty meet Eugen in the prison who initially refuses to talk but later tells them about that day which convinces the lawyers of him being innocent. However, to help him, the team has to use some other tactics because Eugene has used all his plea deals already.

They ask Isabella to sue the head of the jury, Mr. Foster, who forced Isabella’s decision to convict Eugene even though she thought he was innocent. They are then given 48 hours time to prove Eugene’s innocence in the case by the court.

While investigating, Sarah and Billy talk to a former tenant, Cheryl Clauson, who had also given a statement to the police during the earlier investigation but was not used by the lawyers in court. She told them that the day before Gallo died, she had a heated argument with her grandson Roger, about his inheritance.

Sarah and Billy are then accompanied by Matlock to talk to Roger, who denies all the allegations but successfully steals a half-eaten sandwich to match his DNA with the antique spoon that was found at the crime scene.

After Olympia’s requests, ADA Andrew Park (Andrew Ghai) approves them to do the DNA test. However, Roger’s DNA does not match the DNA in the spoon.

ADA Park then testifies that the DNA from the spoon matched with a convicted felon who had died six years ago. It is revealed that he catered for Gallo’s 70th Birthday party and murdered her.

Matlock Episode 16 recap: Olympia’s Johnson case

After saving Eugene, Olympia is back at the top in the senior partner race in Jacobson Moore. However, when her mentee, Sarah, hears her asking favor from Amina for her Johnson case, she thinks Olympia might be leaving the law firm to become a public defender.

However, it is later revealed that the Johson case is Olympia’s secret investigation on Matty. After Julian tells her that he did not place the recording device in her room and later finds a Weschester ice cream card on Alfie’s (Matty’s grandson) wallet which increases her suspicion of Matty’s identity as she had told her she lived in Queens.

The dramatic episode ends with Olympia asking Matlock who she really is, hinting explosive drama ahead in future episodes of the legal drama.
