Investigation begins

Mare arrived at the scene. She told Erin's father, Kenny, the bad news. Kenny quickly blamed Dylan, Erin's ex-boyfriend. Mare questioned Dylan, but he gave little information. Mare then held a press conference. Dawn, the mother of missing Katie, used the moment to remind everyone her daughter was still gone.

County intervenes

Colin Zabel, a detective from the county, arrived at Mare’s office. Mare was angry about this intrusion. They found a video of a fight in the woods. The footage showed Brianna beating Erin severely. Mare arrested Brianna for assault. Brianna's father, Tony, was infuriated. During questioning, Brianna verbally attacked Mare.

She shouted that Mare's son, Kevin, "fucking killed himself." This line delivered a powerful blow, giving the first clear reason for Mare's sadness in Mare of Easttown.

Mare's troubles

Mare visited her ex-husband, Frank. She asked him if he knew Erin. He said he taught her in school. Mare took her grandson, Drew, to a doctor. Drew had a blinking tic. Mare feared mental health problems, like the ones that troubled Kevin. The doctor suggested therapy for Mare's own grief.

Mare immediately rejected this idea. Colin interviewed Mare's daughter, Siobhan. She advised him on working with Mare: "Lower your expectations."

Vengeance and paternity

Mare got flowers and a phone number from Richard. He was the man she recently spent a night with. He convinced her to join him at a party. Tony confronted Mare outside her house. He yelled at her and threatened her. While Mare was out, tragedy struck. Kenny slipped out of his house with a gun.

He found Dylan in his car. Kenny ordered Dylan to drive into the woods. Kenny then shot Dylan twice in the back. Dylan's fate was left unknown. This dark turn defines the end of the Mare of Easttown Episode 2 recap.

The big secret

Mare's mother and Frank took Drew to the park. They met his mother, Carrie. Carrie was in the process of filing for full custody of Drew. The episode ended with Mare learning Carrie had filed the custody request. Tony threw a gallon of milk through her front window. The final moments brought the biggest shock for Mare of Easttown.

Erin’s friend, Jess, revealed Erin's secret. Dylan was not the baby's father. Jess had a suspect: Frank, Mare's ex-husband. This bombshell revelation linked the murder directly to Mare's family in this Mare of Easttown Episode 2 recap.
