James Gunn recently announced a new upcoming Green Lantern series titled, Lanterns. DC Studios has begun working on the early stages of the live-action series. As the name suggests, the new series will be inspired by the DC Comics character, Green Lantern.
The series is expected to showcase characters like John Stewart and Hal Jordan. DC Studios has already begun work on the series by recruiting Damon Lindelof and Chris Mundy as writers. Tom King has also been hired to join the writers' team.
Tom King and Damon Lindelof will also step into the role of executive producers. The upcoming series will be the first live-action series to be made under the leadership of co-chairmen and co-CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn. The series will have eight episodes.
When will Lanterns release?
As Lanterns is still in the early stages of production, there isn't an exact date. The show's release window is 2026. According to reports, DC Studios is searching for directors who can finish the series by July 2025.
We can also assume the release window will be in 2026 as James Gunn revealed in his plan that the series would be released sometime between Superman and The Authority. While the release date for The Authority is still unknown, Superman is expected to be released on July 11, 2025.
Where can the audience watch Lanterns?
According to James Gunn in his announcement video, audiences will be able to watch the series on Max also known as HBO Max. The streaming platform will house the live-action DCEU Green Lanterns series post its release as it already houses all DC content.
What to expect from Lanterns?
Gunn informed fans that the series will be a part of the "Gods and Monsters" phase. Audiences can expect the series to take a deep dive like never before into the lives and powers of many people who have worn the Green Lantern ring.
The upcoming DCEU Green Lanterns series will revolve around the theme of a terrestrial adventure which means the events of the series will happen on Earth. The series is expected to incorporate elements of a crime and mystery genre similar to the True Detective style.
The video also hints at the series' plot, with the comic art that shows Hal Jordan and John Stewart depicting the former covered in an iconic green aura while the latter is covered in an evil yellow aura.
The cast of Lanterns is still unclear
The series has not released many details about its ensemble. Josh Brolin was offered the role of Hal Jordan but he declined the role. The role of Hal Jordan is currently being offered to Kyle Chandler.
While it is still unsure who will play the role of John Stewart, James Gunn mentions in his announcement video that audiences can expect other Green Lanterns to feature throughout the series. While Jessica Cruz is expected to make an appearance, audiences will see Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.
In an interview with Collider in April 2024, Nathan Fillion shared the story of how James Gunn informed him that he would be playing Guy Gardner in the DCEU Green Lanterns series. He stated,
"We were actually at the premiere party after Suicide Squad and he was in a huge crowd of people. We saw each other in the crowd and I congratulated him, 'Oh, my God, that was amazing. It's so great'. He goes, 'Hey, did Peter tell you what we've got for you next?' I said, 'No, he hasn't said'. He looked around like someone was gonna be listening. We were in a throng of people, but he leaned over and said, 'You're gonna be Guy Gardner.'
Lanterns is expected to be released in 2026 and will be available on Max. To read more about the latest stories and updates of your favorite shows, films, and soaps, stay tuned to Soap Central.
