Sam Elliott is joining Landman in Season 2, and he says there is one big reason he took the role. The veteran actor will play T.L. Norris, father to Tommy Norris, who will be played by Billy Bob Thornton. At 81 years old, Elliott brings gravitas and history to a very emotionally charged part in Taylor Sheridan's West Texas oil drama.

Elliott explained in interviews that he did not approach the show looking for work. He was at a point where he could pick and choose. But when Sheridan called, he offered him something special. He says,

"I told him I was having a nice time at home … And Taylor said, ‘Well, I’m gonna put your ass back to work.'"

He said that Sheridan really meant it. According to Elliott, Sheridan told him,

"Buddy, I’m not going without you."

The line struck a chord. It made Elliott feel that Sheridan's world, the Landman world, needed him. He saw it as a gift and a real chance to do meaningful work.

Why did Sam Elliott feel this role in Landman was important?

One big reason Sam Elliott accepted was to work with Billy Bob Thornton again. He and Thornton go way back: they were in Tombstone together. Elliott said he has known Thornton a long time and respects him a lot. He called the chance to play his father "a great opportunity," especially within a Taylor Sheridan story.

Elliott also likes how real Sheridan writes. In his own words, the show has "elements of humor, drama, reality." He said Sheridan "writes honestly" and knows characters very well. He feels Sheridan respects the people in his stories, and that makes the work feel grounded.

Another factor is trust. In earlier work, Elliott has collaborated with Sheridan. He starred in the Yellowstone prequel 1883. Because he already respects Sheridan's craft, he felt confident stepping into the show. Elliott said he thought Sheridan's offer was "a real gift."

What does this mean for Landman Season 2 and beyond?

Their reunion means a lot for the show, Landman. With Elliott playing Tommy's estranged father, the show's family drama gains new weight. Thornton said in interviews that having his father come into his complicated life "amps season 2 up another 100 percent." The character of T.L. adds depth to Tommy's journey and gives the audience a chance to see where he came from.

The casting of the show also speaks to how much Sheridan values his actors. Elliott said that Sheridan invited him in directly. He did not audition like normal.

In public events, both actors also addressed recent news around the show's future. Sheridan has signed a new, big deal elsewhere, but Elliott suggested Landman's future remains solid. He said that the Paramount+ series will stay at Paramount and that it does not depend on Sheridan's new contract. He expressed optimism for the world Sheridan has built.

Elliott's presence may also bring in different viewers: older fans, Western fans, or people who love immersive character stories. His calm authority and experience make the Landman world feel more lived in.

Thus, Sam Elliott joined Landman for one simple yet powerful reason: Taylor Sheridan personally asked him, and made it clear he was a needed part of the show. Combine that with his long history with Billy Bob Thornton, the honesty in Sheridan's writing, and his faith in the story, and you get an offer he could not refuse.

His entry into the show not only deepens the emotional stakes but also signals that this next chapter of the series will be richer, more personal, and deeply rooted in character.
