What does McGee's failed promotion in NCIS Season 22 mean for his character on the show?

Timothy McGee has proved to be an integral part of the MCRT, from being a probie to Alden Parker's most confident Senior Field Agent. His character became a regular in season 2 after being introduced as a recurring in season 1.

After Mark Harmon's exit from the show, McGee was also offered Gibbs' job, which he declined because of a lack of fieldwork in that job. But it looks like his character was ready to climb the ladder in NCIS.

Season 22 began with the team scattered on different assignments, with Nick Torres being undercover to investigate a drug cartel.

However, McGee learns that he did not get the position; rather, it went to Gabriel LaRoche from the Department of Justice, whom McGee's team is investigating as a potential mole for the cartel and the one who blew Torres' cover.

Choosing an outsider over McGee, who has worked hard for the department for over two decades, was disheartening. It also threatened the character's storyline on the show. McGee has no upward mobility within the MCRT unless he takes over the deputy director position, and his role is diversified to include fieldwork.

Murray could also take over as the Director of NCIS if the theory about Leon Vance, the current director, leaving NCIS to focus on his family materializes.

While NCIS did not disclose the mole's identity, the team highly suspects LaRoche. Now that he is in power, it seems like the show just got its villain of the season.

Timothy McGee's possible storylines explored in NCIS

With LaRoche's selection as the Deputy Director and his possibly being an antagonist on the show, McGee can continue to stay in the MCRT and investigate the mole in the organization.

The show might stretch this mole storyline throughout the season, with McGee heading it and becoming Deputy Director at the end. But even if he gets that promotion, it would be against his wish to do fieldwork.

That might be solved by making some changes within the organization's framework. While this is all speculation, and the show has not hinted at any of them, fans do hope to continue seeing McGee on the show.

While episode 3 confirms that McGee will not further participate in day-to-day operations with Parker, Jessica Knight, Nick Torres, Jimmy Palmer, and Kasie Hines, his fate on the show will be revealed with further episodes in season 22.

Whatever storyline the show chooses for McGee, his fans hope that it will do justice to his hard work over 21 seasons.

There were also rumors about Rocky Carroll's Vance leaving the show, which was reportedly false. This makes the position of Deputy Director even more intriguing in the show.
