Hallmark's The Way Home will return with a new season in 2026, following three successful seasons of magic, intense drama, and compelling character storylines. The show follows the story of time travel through a pond in the Landry family property, through which the women of the family time-travel and learn more about their family history.
The Way Home might appear to be a show adapted from a bestselling novel; however, it is actually not adapted from a book. The fantasy drama series is created by Heather Conkie, Marly Reed, and Alexandra Clarke.
More on this in our story.
Is The Way Home based on a book? Speculations explored
The Way Home follows the story of Kat, played by Chyler Leigh, a Grey's Anatomy star. After being away from her hometown for almost two decades, Kat decides to return to Port Haven after losing her job and a failed marriage. She is accompanied by her daughter, Alice, who has never actually met her grandmother, Del, who lives in Port Haven.
After returning to the town, the three Landry women became entangled in their family history and time-travel. Alice, who had no idea about it, discovers and visits two timelines, in the 1990s and 1970s, and also meets two versions of her grandfather, who is dead in the present timeline. This encounter also gives a heartwarming moment between the duo in The Way Home Season 3.
With fantasy adventure and time-travel narrative, the Hallmark series has all the elements of a best-selling novel series. However, it is an original series created by the trio of Alexandra Clarke, Heather Conkie, and Marly Reed. In addition to making the story, the three have also written episodes along with several other writers.
According to Decider, The Way Home was introduced at a time when the Hallmark Channel was undergoing a change, with content on the network becoming more diverse and different from its traditional offerings, including spy thrillers, comedies, and fantasy adventure series such as The Way Home.
In the interview with Decider, Lisa Hamilton Daly, the EVP of programming for Hallmark Media, shared why the fantasy drama series resembles a Netflix original and quipped:
"I’ll tell you a little secret - well, it’s not even secret. I brought that with me. I was at Netflix previously and I developed that there. I have been in love with that show ever since it was pitched to me at lunch one day and the team and everybody did an incredible job bringing it to life. It only gets better. Stuff gets mind blowing by the end, so I’m really excited that people are loving it."
In Season 3 of the popular fantasy series, the women learn from Alice that Colton was aware of the magical pond and time-traveling and had time-traveled himself. Colton also learns about Jacob returning home, but that he wouldn't be able to meet him due to his death in the present timeline. Season 4 will bring more twists and turns, creating another successful chapter when it returns in 2026.
