The NBC drama series Chicago PD gives us a look into the lives of patrol officers and detectives of the 21st District of the Chicago Police Department. Lately, the rumor mill is buzzing with questions about Kim Burgess.
Fans are wondering whether the character, portrayed by Marina Squerciati, is about to exit the show. Other One Chicago stars have been making their exits; could Burgess be next?
Burgess, has been a central character since the series debuted in 2014. She transformed from a flight attendant to a patrol officer, and then a detective. Her journey is one of the most compelling ones on the show.
But what’s next for her character? Is she moving on from the Intelligence Unit? Let’s get into what we know so far about Kim Burgess’s future on Chicago PD.
Chicago PD: Kim Burgess’ rise to detective
In recent seasons, Burgess’ path on Chicago PD has been anything but smooth. In Season 12’s episode Pawns, it took a turn. She got a job offer to become a detective for the Chicago Police Department by Detective Mariel Suarez.
Suarez suggested that it might be better for Burgess to leave the Intelligence Unit. He thought Burgess' boss, Sergeant Hank Voight, could limit her growth. This proposal made fans speculate about whether Kim might take up the offer and leave the team she came to call family.
However, Squerciati herself cleared up the rumors in a recent interview with TV Insider. She said that Burgess’s journey as a detective is just getting started. So, there’s a lot more to explore. In her words,
“When you want something so bad, do you kill it? I don’t know. I think she deserves it and hope she gets it.”
Burgess is ambitious and she wants to keep moving ahead. But she’s also nervous about the new roles and challenges that lie ahead of her. Who wouldn't?
Burgess’ internal battle in Chicago PD
The detective’s character arc in Chicago PD has taken a powerful turn as she struggles with PTSD. Season 8 saw Burgess go through a traumatic experience when she was kidnapped, shot, and left to die by criminals.
Her survival was nothing short of miraculous, but she's still working through the lasting impact of that experience. Season 10’s episode Trapped put her PTSD front and center. It showed her battling her own demons and slowly coming to terms with the scars that are both visible and invisible.
In Trapped, things got intense for Burgess at home when she was hanging out with her ex-fiancé, Officer Adam Ruzek, and her daughter, Makayla. Suddenly, a loud bang from outside (a car backfiring) sent her spiraling. Convinced that it was gunfire, Burgess froze, haunted by flashbacks of her near-death experience from Season 8.
Later on, Burgess and Ruzek stumbled upon a shooting scene. They ended up following the chaos all the way to the subway. While Ruzek went after the suspect, Burgess stayed with the victim, sruggling t to keep her cool as her trauma resurfaced.
Thankfully, Burgess is now seeing a therapist in Chicago PD, a development brings a hopeful note. Squerciati believes facing her past will help Burgess move forward with strength.
Chicago PD: Is Kim leaving the Intelligence Unit for good?
Well, not exactly! Although her recent conversations with Detective Suarez raised the possibility, Burgess ultimately stays put in Intelligence. Though not without a bit of drama, of course.
Deputy Chief Reid made the final call, keeping her in the Intelligence Unit. This, despite Burgess’s insistence on advancing her career without any “favors.” She even confronted Voight, assuming he was behind the decision, but Voight denied it.
However, this storyline opens doors for her character to figure out new challenges as a detective while staying loyal to her roots in the 21st District.
