The reboot of Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries has kept viewers hooked since it first came out in 2020. But how many cases have been solved because of the show? So far, only one case can be directly linked to the series, with a few others getting more attention or making progress thanks to the show.

The most famous solved case is that of a child named Kayla Unbehaun who was taken by her mother in 2017. After her story was shown in the episode “Abducted by Parents” (Season 3, Episode 9), someone who watched the show recognized Kayla in North Carolina in 2022. This led to her being found safe and her mom arrested.

The show has also helped other investigations. For example, the strange deaths of Rey Rivera and JoAnn Romain have received attention, leading to more forensic tests and checking alibis.

While the reboot hasn’t solved as many cases as the original series—which helped close over 250 cases—its worldwide audience means there’s a chance for more breakthroughs.

Kayla Unbehaun’s case is one of the biggest successes of the Unsolved Mysteries reboot. In 2017, nine-year-old Kayla was taken by her mother, leading to a widespread search for her. Netflix featured her story in its third season, using technology to show what she might look like as she grew older.

This updated image played a key role: in 2022, someone in a North Carolina store recognized the now-teenage Kayla and contacted the police.

Her mother was quickly arrested, and Kayla was finally reunited with her father after being apart for five years. This happy ending shows how public vigilance can help solve old cases.

As Terry Dunn Meurer, one of the creators of Unsolved Mysteries, said,

“We’ve always hoped the show would provide answers, and in this case, it truly did.”

The show’s wide audience and visibility turned what might have been a forgotten story into one with a happy resolution.

Progress of other cases on Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries

Kayla’s case is the only one that has been solved so far, but other cases have also seen important progress because of Unsolved Mysteries.

1) Rey Rivera’s death (Season 1, Episode 1 - “Mystery on the Rooftop”):

Rivera’s body was discovered in 2006, and many thought he had died by suicide. After the episode aired, forensic expert Miryam Moya said his injuries looked more like he had been pushed. The case is still unsolved, but the episode did help in garnering attention amongst both the public and professionals.

2) JoAnn Romain’s disappearance (Season 1, Episode 11 - “Lady in the Lake”):

Romain went missing in 2010, and her death was first thought to be a suicide. However, after the episode aired, Tim Matouk, a relative and key suspect, provided an alibi, which changed the direction of the investigation.

These updates show how Unsolved Mysteries helps bring back attention to old cases.

How does Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries reboot compare to the OG series?

The original Unsolved Mysteries, hosted by Robert Stack, was a huge hit from 1988 to 2010 and helped solve more than 250 cases. Its success came from its format, which featured many different mysteries each season, and a live phone line that let viewers share tips right away.

Famous cases, like the arrest of Alan Lee Phillips after many years and Craig Williamson finding himself on reruns, became well-known stories. The new version on Netflix focuses on one case per episode, which co-creator Terry Dunn Meurer says is better for today’s viewers.

While this allows for more details, fewer cases are covered each season, which could explain the fewer breakthroughs. Still, the show’s popularity, global reach, and the option to stream whenever—unlike the original, which aired only once—mean new tips could come in at any time.
